Fat embolism syndrome (FES) is a rare complication of sickle-cell disease (SCD) associated with extremely high mortality rates. It affects predominantly non-SS patients and those with previously mild disease. Rapid institution of exchange transfusion with an aim to reduce HbS to very low levels as soon as FES is suspected can be life-saving.

OBJECTIVE Newborns who suffer from jaundice and/or receive phototherapy (PT) are at a higher risk of developing asthma. In this study we aimed to investigate the relationship between bilirubin and peripheral eosinophil counts in newborns with severe hyperbilirubinemia needing PT. METHODS In this study, a retrospective analysis was performed on 306 newborns with severe hyperbilirubinemia with ...

In the past, reluctance to determine the serum magnesium level in the newborn infant has been due in part to the relative unreliability of methods hitherto employed (Wacker and Vallee, 1958), and the need for large amounts of blood, particularly where repeat determinations are proposed. In 1964 Rice and Lapara described a rapid, accurate ultramicro method for the determination of ionic magnesiu...

A prospective study to evaluate efficacy and safety of partial exchange blood transfusion (PEBT) with normal saline or plasma was conducted in 30 symptomatic polycythemic newborns. Babies were randomly assigned to receive PEBT either with normal saline or plasma. Both groups were comparable in terms of birth weight, gestational age, preexchange hematocrit and viscosity. A significant fall in he...

UNLABELLED The aim of this paper is to critically review neonatal polycythaemia (NP) literature, in terms of definition, diagnosis and management. We reviewed all Medline articles on NP up to December 2009. (i) The textbook definition of NP [venous haematocrit (HCT) > 65%] is empirical and not based on statistical definition, symptoms or complications. (ii) Measurement of viscosity is not bette...

Background: Blood transfusion is common in infants. Due to the weakened immune system of newborns and the risk of blood transfusion complications, it is necessary to pay more attention following or after to blood transfusion. The aim of this study was to evaluate the frequency and risk factors of blood transfusions in hospitalized neonates. Methods: A cross-sectional study was performed on 1...

Two preterm infants with peak serum bilirubin concentrations of 270 mumol/l and 200 mumol/l, respectively showed improvement in the wave peak latencies of the auditory and visual evoked potentials after exchange transfusion. The implications of this observation and the use of evoked potential recording in neonatal jaundice are discussed.
