An abnormal ratio between Na+ and K+ conductances seems to be the cause for the depolarization and paralysis of skeletal muscle in primary hypokalemic periodic paralysis. Recently we have shown that the "K+ channel opener" cromakalim hyperpolarizes mammalian skeletal muscle fibers. Now we have studied the effects of this drug on the twitch force of muscle biopsies from normal and diseased human...

Transient periodical muscle paralysis is an important neurological presentation. Thyrotoxic hypokalemic paralysis is an uncommon type of thyrotoxic paralysis. Except for the findings specifically caused by the subtle hyperthyroid state the clinical and biochemical features of thyrotoxic hypokalemic paralysis are identical to those of familial periodic paralysis. In this article, a case of a 26 ...

We report on timing and spectral observations of the microquasar XTE J1550 − 564 during its 2000 outburst made by the Rossi X-ray Timing Experiment (RXTE). We study the spectral properties of the source during both the rise to the outburst and its decline. We observe transitions from a low hard state to an intermediate state, and vice versa, before the source returns to quiescence. We show that...

Photoluminescence decay was used as a structure-sensitive method to compare the distribution of emitting sites in periodic mesoporous organosilicates (PMOs) to their respective molecular analogs. The observed close similarity of PL decays confirms the molecular nature of PMOs and high homogeneity of emitting sites.

BACKGROUND Acute hypokalaemic paralysis is characterised by acute flaccid muscle weakness and has a complex aetiological spectrum. Herein we report, for the first time, a case of unilateral adrenal hyperplasia accompanied by hypokalaemic periodic paralysis type I resulting from a novel dominant mutation in CACNA1S. We present the clinical features and prognosis after adrenalectomy in this case....

We report the discovery of quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) at roughly 187 and 150 Hz in the X-ray intensity of X-ray nova XTE J1859+226. The source was observed during a recent outburst with the Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer. Besides these high-frequency QPOs, we have also detected QPOs (and sometimes their harmonics) at 6-7 Hz and significant broadband variability at low frequencies. These pr...

Hypokalaemic periodic paralysis in a thyrotoxic Polynesian is described. The possible pathophysiology is discussed. Though common in Orientals, this condition is uncommon in Caucasians and has not been described before in a Polynesian.
