The detailed definition of the structure of DNA in chromosomes and in interphase chromatin is important for correlating the structure of the genetic material with various states of physiological activity. A general approach to developing specific reagents for a variety of such studies in solution and in tissues is to combine a chemically specific organic cation with the electron-opaque phosphot...

In November 2016, an influenza A(H5N8) outbreak caused deaths of wild birds and domestic poultry in Germany. Clade 2.3.4.4 virus was closely related to viruses detected at the Russia-Mongolia border in 2016 but had new polymerase acidic and nucleoprotein segments. These new strains may be more efficiently transmitted to and shed by birds.

Approved influenza vaccines based on the induction of antibodies to hemagglutinin are strain specific and Abstract cumbersome to manufacture. Several alternative vaccine strategies based on the induction of humoral responses against the external domain of the M2 protein, as well as cellular responses against nucleoprotein, have the potential to target multiple strains of influenza. A universal ...

Recently determined structures of a number of Myc family proteins have provided significant insights into the molecular nature of complex assembly and DNA binding. These structures illuminate the details of specific interactions that govern the assembly of nucleoprotein complexes and, in doing so, raise more questions regarding Myc biology. In this review, we focus on the lessons provided by th...

Bacterial conjugation is the process by which a conjugative element (CE) is transferred horizontally from a donor to a recipient cell via a connecting pore. One of the first steps in the conjugation process is the formation of a nucleoprotein complex at the origin of transfer (oriT), where one of the components of the nucleoprotein complex, the relaxase, introduces a site- and strand specific n...

China has seen a massive resurgence of rabies cases in the last 15 years with more than 25,000 human fatalities. Initial cases were reported in the southwest but are now reported in almost every province. There have been several phylogenetic investigations into the origin and spread of the virus within China but few reports investigating the impact of the epidemic on neighboring countries. We t...

Flexible filamentous viruses include economically important plant pathogens. Their viral particles contain several hundred copies of a helically arrayed coat protein (CP) protecting a (+)ssRNA. We describe here a structure at 3.9 Å resolution, from electron cryomicroscopy, of Pepino mosaic virus (PepMV), a representative of the genus Potexvirus (family Alphaflexiviridae). Our results allow mode...
