onychomycosis refers to nail infections, caused by fungi including yeasts and non-dermatophyte moulds. one or several toenails or fingernails (seldom all) may be involved in this condition. many cases of fingernail onychomycosis are due to yeasts. fungal infection has emerged as an important cause of neonatal infection, associated with significant morbidity and mortality, especially in very low...

B6D2F1 mice received cobalt-60 radiation on day 10.5 of gestation at doses of 50 to 300 rad at a dose rate of 40 rad per min. These animals were studied at four selected age periods: (a) day 14.5 of gestation, (b) neonate, (c) juvenile, and (d) 13 week-old adult. Fetal liver cellularity, morphology, and hemopoietic progenitor cell concentration reflected injury after 200 rad. The 15 day-old mou...

Partial peripheral nerve injury in adult rats results in neuropathic pain-like hypersensitivity, while that in neonatal rats does not, a phenomenon also observed in humans. We therefore compared gene expression profiles in the dorsal horn of adult and neonatal rats in response to the spared nerve injury (SNI) model of peripheral neuropathic pain. The 148 differentially regulated genes in adult,...

In mammals, the olfactory bulb (OB) constitutes one of two regions of the postnatal brain with continuous neurogenesis throughout life. Despite intense explorations of neuronal replacement in the adult OB, little is known about the mechanisms that operate at earlier postnatal stages. This question is particularly pertinent, because the majority of local interneurons are born in the neonate, whe...

We report a term, small for gestational age neonate having full spectrum of VACTERL association. In addition, the neonate also had triad of signs and symptoms associated with prune belly syndrome. The concurrence of these two syndromes could lie in their common etiology of defect in mesodermal differentiation. Such a combination is extremely rare and is generally incompatible with life.

Increasing demand for human hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) in clinical and research applications necessitates expansion of HSCs in vitro. Before these cells can be used they must be carefully evaluated to assess their stem cell activity. Here, we expanded cord blood CD34(+) CD133(+) cells in a defined medium containing angiopoietin like 5 and insulin-like growth factor binding protein 2 and ev...
