Strain Hxd3, an alkane-degrading sulfate reducer previously isolated and described by Aeckersberg et al. (F. Aeckersberg, F. Bak, and F. Widdel, Arch. Microbiol. 156:5-14, 1991), was studied for its alkane degradation mechanism by using deuterium and (13)C-labeled compounds. Deuterated fatty acids with even numbers of C atoms (C-even) and (13)C-labeled fatty acids with odd numbers of C atoms (C...

Oil spillages lead to the formation of hydrocarbon and metal mixtures possessing effects on alkane-degrading bacteria that are responsible for bioremediation oil-contaminated soils waters. Studies bacterial responses mixture petroleum can inform appropriate strategies bioremediation. We employed a luminescent bioreporter Acinetobacter baylyi ADPWH_recA with alkane degradation capability evaluat...

The use of an alkane mixture that remains liquid at 77 K to freeze specimens has advantages over the use of a pure alkane that is solid at 77 K. It was found that a mixture of methane and ethane did not give a cooling rate adequate to produce vitreous ice, but a mixture of propane and ethane did result in vitreous ice. Furthermore, the latter mixture produced less damage to specimens mounted on...

Polyols are typically produced using batch processes and KOH as the dominant homogeneous catalyst. In this case, the main reaction is an ionic polymerization reaction, and products with narrow molecular weight distributions (MWDs) are typically obtained. As observed in living polymerization systems, polyols of varying molecular weights serve as starting points for manufacture of polyols of high...

Novel polyols were synthesized by controlled polymerization of hydroxylated fatty acids from methyl soyate. Polymerization of methyl esters of hydroxy fatty acids gives a hyperbranched (HB) product with different content of hydroxyl groups depending on the degree of conversion. Molecular weights, functionality and hydroxyl equivalent of polyols can be controlled by controlling the degree of con...

Two kinds of aqueous acrylic polyols (single step and multi step synthesis type) have been investigated for their performance in the two-component aqueous polyurethane application, by using more selective catalysts. The aliphatic polyfunctional isocyanates based on hexamethylen diisocyanates have been employed as suitable hardeners. The complex of zirconium, commercially known as K-KATXC-6212, ...

The new hexanuclear mixed-valence vanadium complex [V(3)O(3)(OEt)(ashz)(2)(μ-OEt)](2) (1) with an N,O-donor ligand is reported. It acts as a highly efficient catalyst toward alkane oxidations by aqueous H(2)O(2). Remarkably, high turnover numbers up to 25000 with product yields of up to 27% (based on alkane) stand for one of the most active systems for such reactions.

Undi, M., Wilson, C., Ominski, K. H. and Wittenberg, K. M. 2008. Comparison of techniques for estimation of forage dry matter intake by grazing beef cattle. Can. J. Anim. Sci. 88: 693 701. Four techniques were compared for their ability to estimate forage dry matter intake (DMI) of grazing animals. In the Cage technique, 10 grazing cages were placed within each pasture, and forage inside and ou...
