Vibrio cholerae is the cause of large cholera outbreaks, especially in endemic regions with high poverty and inadequate sanitation. Here, we announce the complete genome sequence of the virulence-associated broad host range V. cholerae phage VcP032, including a brief summary of its genotypic and phenotypic features.

The paper presents a hypothesis that the most probable cause of death ancient world Indus (Harappa) civilization was epidemic Asiatic cholera. A brief description existed for two millennia (3300–1300 BC) is given. It shown previously described factors decline thriving (climate change, shallowing river and reduction in floods, catastrophic drought, economic crisis, etc.) do not provide consisten...

A collection of Vibrio cholerae non-O1 isolated from the aquatic environs of Calcutta, a cholera-hyperendemic area, were examined for the production of cholera toxin (CT), Shiga-like toxins (Vero toxins), heat-stable enterotoxin, and hemolysins. Two (0.5%) V. cholerae non-O1 isolates produced CT. The DNA from both these isolates also hybridized with a DNA probe containing sequences encoding the...

Background: The ability to sensitively detect Vibrio cholera with PCR-ELISA method represents a considerable advancement over alternative more time-consuming methods for detection of this pathogen. The aim of this research is to evaluate the suitability of a PCR-enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay for sensitive and rapid detection of V. cholera O1. Methods: The 398-bp sequence of a gene that cod...

During the 2010 cholera outbreak in Haiti, water and seafood samples were collected to detect Vibrio cholerae. The outbreak strain of toxigenic V. cholerae O1 serotype Ogawa was isolated from freshwater and seafood samples. The cholera toxin gene was detected in harbor water samples.

A coagglutination procedure for detecting Vibrio cholerae was applied directly to 125 watery fecal samples received in the laboratory for bacteriological culture: many of these were from suspected cases of cholera. Of 47 bacteriologically proved cases of cholera, 44 (93.6%) gave positive results by the coagglutination method. There was a good correlation between the coagglutination method, dark...

Monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) were prepared against toxin-coregulated pili (TCP) isolated from Vibrio cholerae O1 El Tor. Despite their limited bactericidal potential, two MAbs were able to mediate biotype-specific protection against experimental cholera in infant mice. These MAbs were used in immunoblotting studies to assess seroconversion to El Tor TCP following cholera. Clear anti-pilus respo...

A total of 209 pathogenic vibrios strains were isolated from Muthupettai mangrove environment, Southeast coast of India. All strains were identified to be 8 species (Vibrio cholera, Vibrio harveyi, Vibrio mimicus, Vibrio splendidus, Vibrio aestuarianus, Vibrio vulnificus, Vibrio parahaemolyticus and Vibrio metschnikovii) from all stations. The levels of resistance of bacteria to various antibio...

We report a case of a cholera-like gastroenteritis subsequent with bacteremia in a healthy man following consumption of raw clams. Although we failed to recover the organism from the patient's stool culture, his blood culture was positive for a non-cholera toxin-producing yet cytotoxin-producing non-O1 and non-O139 Vibrio cholerae.

Altered El Tor Vibrio cholerae O1, with classical cholera toxin B gene, was isolated from 16 patients with severe diarrhea at St. Mark's Hospital, Arbonite, Haiti, <3 weeks after onset of the current cholera epidemic. Variable-number tandem-repeat typing of 187 isolates showed minimal diversity, consistent with a point source for the epidemic.
