A six yea r old girl of Ethiopian origin suffering from atolJic eczema sim:e the age of two is presented. Prior to a visit to her grandparents in Ethiopia, she receh"ed 250 mg chloroquine weekly as a prophylaxis against malaria. Three weeks thereafter, she developed sharply demarcated dcpigmented ~treas on the face, especially in the periorbital area. On returning home to Norway the medication ...

Phthalocyanines (Pcs) bearing phosphonic acid groups at the periphery exhibit a potential photodynamic effect to induce phototoxicity on human bladder cancer epithelial cells (UM-UC-3). In vitro photophysical and biological studies show high intrinsic ability to inhibit the activity of urokinase plasminogen activator (uPA) and matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9).

Two Mn(I) carbonyl complexes namely [MnBr(azpy)(CO)3] and [Mn(azpy)(CO)3(PPh3)](ClO4) (azpy = 2-phenylazopyridine) have been synthesized and characterized. Both complexes exhibit rapid CO release upon exposure to low power visible light. [MnBr(azpy)(CO)3] shows significant phototoxicity toward two malignant cell lines HeLa and MDA-MB-231.

BACKGROUND Psoriasis of the scalp can be a major therapeutic challenge as response to topical medication is often inadequate. The excimer laser has potential for providing local phototherapy as its high irradiance makes treatment at this site a practical option. OBJECTIVES To analyze retrospectively results of treating scalp psoriasis with the excimer (308 nm) laser. METHODS Thirty-five pat...

This study was performed in order to compare the phototoxic potential of grepafloxacin (a new fluoroquinolone for the treatment of respiratory tract infections) with that of a number of marketed fluoroquinolones. Groups of Balb/c mice received either control material or grepafloxacin, lomefloxacin, sparfloxacin, ofloxacin, ciprofloxacin or enoxacin at an oral dose of 200 mg/kg before being expo...

BACKGROUND Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a less invasive and effective salvage treatment for local failure after chemoradiotherapy (CRT) for esophageal cancer, however it causes a high rate of skin phototoxicity and requires a long sun shade period. Talaporfin sodium is a rapidly cleared photosensitizer that is expected to have less phototoxicity. This study was undertaken to clarify the optimu...

Intracellular porphyrin generation following administration of 5-aminolaevulinic acid (ALA) has been widely used in photodynamic therapy for a range of malignant and nonmalignant lesions. However, ALA is relatively hydrophilic and lacks stability at physiologic pH, limiting its bioavailability. We have investigated more lipophilic, uncharged ALA-peptide prodrugs based on phenylalanyl-ALA conjug...

We report a new class of photosensitizer drug networks that can home into mitochondria and provide geospatial phototoxicity for tumors. We take advantage of the cleavable chemical network between the photosensitizer drug and poly(ethylene glycol), and find a significant increase in the efficiency of the multimeric drug network in mitochondria uptake and tumor inhibition.

Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) were exploited to coat Au nanorods (AuNRs) as a hyperthermia agent for enhanced plasmonic photothermal therapy. The utilization of a MOF shell reduces the cytotoxicity of AuNRs and enhances the photothermal transduction efficiency of AuNRs, resulting in the improved phototoxicity of MOF coated AuNRs compared with the unmodified AuNRs.

We report the synthesis of four new cationic dipolar push–pull dyes, together with an evaluation of their photophysical and photobiological characteristics pertinent to imaging membranes by fluorescence and second harmonic generation (SHG). All four dyes consist of an N,N-diethylaniline electron-donor conjugated to a pyridinium electron-acceptor via a thiophene bridge, with either vinylene (–CH...
