The details of two cases of chronic methanol poisoning are presented. Both patients initially developed clinical symptoms of multiple sclerosis: visual disturbances, intention tremor, reduced abdominal reflexes, impaired coordination and difficulties with walking. After the exposure to methanol had ceased the multiple sclerosis symptoms persisted in patient 1 but disappeared gradually in patien...

Nickel modified carbon fibre electrodes were prepared by electrochemical oxidation and partial reduction of a graphite fibre electrode with a slow linear potential sweep in 97% H 2 SO 4 solution followed by impregnation & ionexchange with Ni +2 species. The cyclic voltammetry of the modified electrode in an alkaline medium showed electrocatalytic activity towards methanol oxidation which is con...

In this study, TiO2 thin film photocatalyst on carbon fibers was used to synthesize ultra-long single crystalline Pt nanowires via a simple photoreduction route (thermally activated photoreduction). It also acted as a co-catalytic material with Pt. Taking advantage of the high-aspect ratio of the Pt nanostructure as well as the excellent catalytic activity of TiO2, this hybrid structure has the...

Accidental or intentional ingestion of substances containing methanol and ethylene glycol can result in death, and some survivors are left with blindness, renal dysfunction, and chronic brain injury. However, even in large ingestions, a favorable outcome is possible if the patient arrives at the hospital early enough and the poisoning is identified and appropriately treated in a timely manner. ...

Brain injury associated with methanol toxicity can be ischemic, necrotic or hemorrhagic in nature. It most commonly affects the putamen area bilaterally; however, it can be seen in other locations. This report describes a 22-year-old intoxicated patient who developed an epidural hematoma following hemodialysis. Heparinization during hemodialysis may contribute to cerebral hemorrhagic complicati...

The eyes and optic nerves were studied histologically in a fatal case of methanol poisoning in a 37-year-old man. The most striking findings were bilateral central necrosis of the optic nerves from behind the lamina cribrosa to the orbital apex. Proximal parts of the nerve and the tract showed no necrosis. It is suggested that the complex blood supply of the nerve may be of importance.

Liquid feed direct methanol fuel cells (DMFC) are promising candidates for portable power applications. However, owing to the problems associated with expensive Pt-based catalysts, viz., CO poisoning, a promising approach is to use complex oxides of the type ABO3 (A = Sr, Ce, La, etc. and B = Co, Fe, Ni, Pt, Ru, etc.).
