Incorporation of imidazolium ion functionalities into the paraffinic side-chain termini of a triphenylene derivative resulted in stabilization of a columnar mesophase of its liquid crystalline assembly, which was retained over a wider temperature range down to 4 degrees C by an externally added imidazolium-based ionic liquid.

A series of photoresponsive halogen-bonded liquid crystals (LCs) were successfully constructed using molecular halogen and azopyridine compounds, which show interesting properties of photoinduced phase transition upon UV irradiation. In addition, bromine-bonded LCs were first obtained with high mesophase stability.

Series of structurally related substituted triphenylene derivatives were designed and synthesised to interrogate key features which determine mesophase formation and stability, and to challenge the general conclusions previously proposed by us and others. It is apparent that no single, simple principle can be universally applied.

The type of the mesophase is altered by a small change in the molecular architecture, i.e. increasing the number of alkyl chains attached to the mesogenic core at terminal positions. Lamellar (1D) and columnar (2D) phases are formed for molecules with one and three terminal chains, respectively. For those with two chains 3D phases are observed with either cubic or triclinic symmetry structure.

A new truxene discotic liquid crystal possessing only three octyloxy chains (3C8OTRX) was studied on the mesomorphic and semiconducting properties to reveal that it exhibits a high drift mobility of positive carriers in the order of 10(-2) cm(2) V(-1) s(-1) in the hexagonal ordered columnar (Col(ho)) mesophase.

We measured the charge carrier mobilities for two isomers of fluorenone-based liquid crystalline organic semiconductors from their isotropic down to crystalline states through one or two mesophases. Improved charge transport properties of melt-processed crystalline films were obtained for the isomer exhibiting a highly ordered mesophase below its disordered smectic phase.
