Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) causes lower respiratory infection among infants and young children worldwide. Annually in the United States, RSV infection has been associated with an estimated 57,527 hospitalizations and 2.1 million outpatient visits among children aged <5 years. In temperate climate zones, RSV generally circulates during the fall, winter, and spring. However, the exact timi...

cryptosporial and bacterial co-infection is reported in a budgerigar with clinical manifestations of septicemia and respiratory tract infection. microscopically large number of round to oval 2-5μm cryptosporidial organisms were found to be lodged on the parabronchial epithelial cells of the respiratory tract. the bacterial colonies were seen around the parabronchial spaces of the lung tissue. i...

The biochemical classification of the Klebsiella proposed by Cowan, Steel, Shaw, and Duguid (1960) has been applied to 50 strains isolated as the pure or predominant growth from sputum, and Klebsiella species have been correlated with the severity of the chest infection in the patient. A modification in nomenclature is suggested.

Ceftriaxone is a new, third-generation cephalosporin that, because of its long half-life, offers potential advantages of cost and convenience over similar agents such as cefotaxime. We compared the two drugs in a prospective, randomized study of the treatment of chest infections in seriously ill patients. Fifty-one patients (90 percent of whom were mechanically ventilated) received either ceftr...

Up to this point in the text we have considered the use of the logistic regression model in settings where we observe a single dichotomous response for a sample of statistically independent subjects. However, there are settings where the assumption of independence of responses may not hold for a variety of reasons. For example, consider a study of asthma in children in which subjects are interv...

The potential efficacy of an antibacterial depends not only on its spectrum of activity but also on its concentration at the site of infection. The tissue kinetics of telithromycin-the first ketolide antibacterial-are reviewed here. Telithromycin accumulates rapidly in white blood cells, inflammatory fluid, and cells and tissues of the upper and lower respiratory tract, with mean concentrations...

Community-acquired lower respiratory tract infection (LRTI) is a common clinical problem, and a chest radiograph is the most common investigation. This study investigated why general practitioners (GPs) request radiographs and whether radiographic features of LRTI affect management. The 12 month study included GP-requested chest radiographs performed at the Manchester Royal Infirmary. The GPs o...

BACKGROUND To reduce the spread of antibiotic resistance, there is a pressing need for worldwide implementation of effective interventions to promote more prudent prescribing of antibiotics for acute LRTI. This study is a process analysis of the GRACE/INTRO trial of a multifactorial intervention that reduced antibiotic prescribing for acute LRTI in six European countries. The aim was to underst...

BACKGROUND Inuit infants who reside in the Nunavut (NU) regions of Arctic Canada have extremely high rates of lower respiratory tract infections (LRTIs) associated with significant health expenditures, but the costs in other regions of Arctic Canada have not been documented. OBJECTIVE This prospective surveillance compares, across most of Arctic Canada, the rates and costs associated with LRT...

The aim of our study was to examine whether pre-natal exposure to dichlorodiphenyldichloroethylene (DDE) increases the risk of lower respiratory tract infections (LRTIs) and wheeze in infants. The study is based on a birth cohort of 1,455 mother-child pairs. Maternal serum concentrations of DDE, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and hexachlorobenzene (HCB) were measured during pregnancy. Parenta...
