Background: Biliary obstruction impairs liver function although the pathophysiological mechanism is incompletely understood. Aims: The aim of this study was to examine serial changes in liver metabolism in patients with obstructive jaundice using image guided in vivo 31-phosphorus magnetic resonance spectroscopy (P MRS). This technique allows repeated and non-invasive assay of organ energy meta...

The Mirizzi syndrome is a rare disorder that usually presents with jaundice and cholangitis; its lack of recognition in the diagnostic path could have serious consequences for the patient undergoing cholecystectomy. Here we describe the clinical case of a jaundiced patient from the ultrasound suspect of Mirizzi syndrome to the surgical treatment.

Twenty-one patients treated for depression with iprindole developed evidence of liver damage: 15 were jaundiced, five had bilirubinuria, and one had pruritus. These complications occurred between four and 21 days after initial exposure to the drug. All patients recovered. Light and electron microscopic findings in liver biopsies of one of these patients were those of cholestasis without inflamm...

In radioimmunoassays and radioassays for various constituents of serum, color quenching is a source of error when liquid-scintillation methods are used in samples that contain hemolyzed blood and samples from jaundiced patients. A quench correction can be made by using the External Standard Channels Ratio method and normalizing the ratios, or, alternatively, by chemical decolorization with tetr...

Oxidant injury is considered to be an important mechanism in the pathophysiology of acute renal failure. It has been thought that decrease in extracellular and intracellular fluid and endotoxemia seen in obstructive jaundice may cause an increase in production of oxygen free radicals and impairment in antioxidant defense mechanism. This study is designed to investigate the possible role of oxid...

BACKGROUND Previous studies have suggested that transcutaneous bilirubinometry (TcB) may provide a useful method for screening for significant jaundice, thereby reducing unnecessary blood tests. These studies have not allowed an estimation of the magnitude of such a benefit. OBJECTIVES To evaluate the accuracy of TcB as a method of determining the need for serum bilirubin (SBR) measurements i...

BACKGROUND To prevent severe hyperbilirubinemia and bilirubin neurotoxicity, the American Academy of Pediatrics' management guideline for hyperbilirubinemia in near term infants is used worldwide. A leading guideline for jaundiced preterm infants is lacking whereas the risk on severe hyperbilirubinemia is high in these infants. Our aim was to define uniform treatment thresholds for jaundiced pr...
