The human neocortex is increased in size and complexity as compared with most other species. Neocortical expansion has recently been attributed to protracted neurogenesis by outer radial glial cells in the outer subventricular zone, a region present in humans but not in rodents. The mechanisms of human outer radial glial cell generation are unknown, but are proposed to involve division of ventr...

The resistance and susceptibility of sheep to the common abomasal nematode parasite, Teladorsagia circumcincta is strongly associated with the differential polarization of the immune response. Resistant animals control larval colonization by the production of a protective antibody response regulated by Th2 T cells. Susceptible sheep respond to infection by developing an inflammatory Th1/Th17 re...

The resurgence of interest in high frequency (HF) radio may be largely attributed to the success of automation in making HF usable by operators with minimal HF training. Unfortunately, Automatic Link Establishment (ALE) technology opens automated HF networks to possible hostile manipulation. To counter this vulnerability, a scheme called Linking Protection (LP) has been developed and standardiz...

Spiralian development is characterized by the conservation of spindle orientation and cell geometry during early cleavage stages, as well as features of the ultimate fates of identified cells. This complex set of characters is shared by a number of animal lineages including nemerteans, polyclad platyhelminthes, annelids and mollusks. How a similar, highly stereotypical cleavage program can give...

The Mre11-Rad50-Nbs1 (MRN) complex senses DNA double-strand breaks and recruits different repair pathway and checkpoint proteins to break foci. Two new studies (Williams et al., 2009; Lloyd et al., 2009) identify Nbs1 as a key factor in this process and reveal how an N-terminal protein recruitment module in Nbs1 binds to different response factors through shared phosphopeptide motifs.
