introduction: pulmonary tuberculosis is major problem worldwide and it is estimated one third the world population are already infected and each year 9 million people develop full blown tuberculosis of these 3 million die of the disease, annually. delay in diagnosis and treatment are major problems that play a significant role in all aspect of the disease from patient treatment to transmission ...
We present a data-fidelity metric for quantifying distortion in slow-light optical pulse delay devices. We demonstrate the utility of this metric by applying it to the performance optimization of gain-based slow-light delay systems for Gaussian and super-Gaussian pulses. Symmetric Lorentzian double-line and triple-line gain systems are optimized and achieve maximum delay of 1.5 and 1.7 times th...
Timing jitter is one of the most important properties of femtosecond mode-locked lasers and optical frequency combs. Accurate measurement of timing jitter power spectral density (PSD) is a critical prerequisite for optimizing overall noise performance and further advancing comb applications both in the time and frequency domains. Commonly used jitter measurement methods require a reference mode...
We introduce the concept of an indirect photonic transition and demonstrate its use in a dynamic delay line to alter the group velocity of an optical pulse. Operating on an ultrafast time scale, we show continuously tunable delays of up to 20 ps, using a slow light photonic crystal waveguide only 300 μm in length. Our approach is flexible, in that individual pulses in a pulse stream can be cont...
In this paper, we consider the construction of an optical priority queue with a single (M + 1) × (M + 1) switch and M fiber delay lines. The M fiber delay lines are connected from M outputs of the switch back to M inputs of the switch, leaving one input (resp. output) of the switch for the input (resp. output) of the priority queue. It was known in [8][9] that with an appropriate choice of the ...
We demonstrate a novel concept for a position sensitive microchannel plate detector. This detector provides sub-millimeter spatial resolution by examining the signal induced on a wire harp by the electron cloud from a microchannel plate detector. Wires in the harp are efficiently read out by coupling them to a delay line.
We present a tunable optical delay line based on the use of a single chirped fiber Bragg grating written into a standard single mode optical fiber. In the proposed scheme, the delay is induced through the Bragg grating differential group delay curve. This is achieved by launching orthogonally polarized optical pulses in both directions into the Bragg grating and by controlling its local birefri...
Fault tolerance requires the inclusion of redundant information. In this paper an on-line error detecting adder is presented in which the redundant information serves a dual purpose. It provides fault tolerance during the arithmetic operations while also providing a method by which addition is constrained to become a constant delay operation regardless of the word size of the operands.
Automatic computer recognition of arbitrary handwritten characters remains as one of the more elusive targets for computer researchers. Methods incorporating knowledge of time-sequencing of data point inputs have achieved some success, but are not generally applicable to real-world applications where such time-dependency information is often not available. Using a simple algorithm for synthesiz...
Single-mode optical fiber is an attractive delay medium for processing microwave frequency signals due to its extremely low loss ( <0.1 dB/ps) and large available time-bandwidth product (in excess of 105 ). Recent progress in the efficient tapping of light from single-mode fibers has made it possible to construct recirculating and nonrecirculating (tapped) delay-line structures that can perform...
