Purpose: Ciprofloxacin, an antibacterial agent, is having low solubility in aqueous solution and high rate of absorption from the stomach. It is precipitated at alkaline pH which leads to erratic absorption of the drug from small intestine. To overcome these difficulties, many researchers have prepared different formulations of Ciprofloxacin. But till now very few formulations are available fro...
Chancroid is a major sexually transmitted disease in many developing countries. Although single-dose and short-course treatment of chancroid have been described, the increasing resistance of Hemophilus ducreyi to antimicrobial agents requires continuing evaluation of new therapies. Ciprofloxacin is a new quinolone antimicrobial agent with excellent in vitro efficacy against H. ducreyi. A double...
OBJECTIVE We attempted to determine if an increase in resistance to ciprofloxacin occurred among nosocomial pathogens, especially Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus. METHODS We examined 1989-1992 ciprofloxacin susceptibility results from 8,517 P aeruginosa and 9,021 S aureus isolates associated with nosocomial infections reported to the National Nosocomial Infections Surveillanc...
Thirty-seven patients with methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus infections and/or colonization were treated with oral ciprofloxacin (750 mg twice a day). Clinical cure or improvement of infections occurred in 91% of the patients, and bacteriologic cure occurred in 60%. Ciprofloxacin therapy suppressed methicillin-resistant S. aureus colonization in 55% of the patients. Ciprofloxacin-resi...
The efficacy of ciprofloxacin in eradicating pharyngeal colonization of Neisseria meningitidis was studied among army recruits in Finland. Ciprofloxacin (250 mg) or placebo was given twice a day for 2 days to 118 meningococcal carriers. Meningococcal carriage was eradicated in 96% of subjects given ciprofloxacin and in 13% of those given placebos.
Introduction: Infections from gram negative bacilli is a challenge for clinicians and laboratory personnel. Treatment of these infections remained as an area concern. Both fluroquinolones cephalosporins are most common choice antibiotics. Despite Cephalosporins, being drug they expensive also showed many adverse reactions. This study, compares reevaluates the susceptibility bacteria to (ciprofl...
Ciprofloxacin activity against Leptospira interrogans serogroup icterohaemorrhagiae was studied in vitro and in an animal model. The MBC of ciprofloxacin was 0.6 microgram/ml. Three of three Syrian hamsters died 8 to 9 days after intraperitoneal challenge with 10(6) leptospires. In contrast, five of six animals given ciprofloxacin 3 or 5 days after challenge survived.
