Background and Aim: Acanthamoeba is a free-living amoebae commonly found in the environmental sources such as soil, water, and dust. This parasite is the causative agent of amoebic keratitis (AK). The objective of the present study was to investigate the presence of Acanthamoeba genotypes in water sources in Bojnurd City.   Amoebiasis of the uterine cervix is an extremely rare entity and presentation as carcinoma cervix has only been reported once in the extensively searched English literature. It can clinically simulate cervical malignancy by virtue of surface papillomatous and overall ulcerated and necrotic appearance. We present a case of amoebic cervicitis in a 55-year old female which was suspected to be a...

Jaundice in patients with amoebic liver abscess is a frequent occurrence. However, the pathophysiology of jaundice in these patients is not fully understood. Hepatic necrosis leads to damage to bile ducts as well as various vascular structures, which in turn leads to biliovascular fistula and jaundice. We studied the mechanism of jaundice in patients with amoebic liver abscess. We prospectively...

Amoebic liver abscess is a common disease, especially in endemic areas, but it is a rare cause of inferior vena cava (IVC) obstruction, with only a few cases appearing in the literature. We report three cases of amoebic liver abscess complicated with obstruction of the IVC and which responded to conservative treatment or radiological intervention.

These are Acanthamoeba spp., Balamuthia mandrillaris (the only known species of Balamuthia), Naegleria fowleri (sometimes considered not to be an amoeba at all, but more closely related to Leishmania and Trypanosoma) and Sappinia pedata. They are distinct from the more famous Entamoeba histolytica (an obligate anaerobic parasite which can cause amoebiasis, amoebic dysentery and amoebic liver ab...

Amoebic liver abscess (ALA) with jaundice and encephalopathy is a rare occurrence and has been recognised and studied more frequently in recent years. We present a case of massive ALA presenting with jaundice, hepatic encephalopathy, and septicaemia that was treated successfully with percutaneous drainage of the abscess, right-sided chest tube insertion, and anti-amoebic therapy.

In order to observe the cytotoxicity of Acanthamoeba spp., which were isolated from contact lens containers as ethiological agents for the probable amoebic keratitis in Korea, the crystal violet staining method and LDH release assay were carried out. In the crystal violet staining method, among eight contact lens container isolates, isolate 3 (Acanthamoeba KA/LS5) showed 83.6% and 81.8% of cyto...

Acanthamoebae are the causative agents of an often seriously progressing keratitis (AK) occurring predominantly in contact lens wearers and can cause several disseminating infections potentially resulting in granulomatous amoebic encephalitis (GAE) in the immunocompromised host. Our institution is the Austrian reference laboratory for Acanthamoeba diagnostics and the aim of this study was to gi...

PURPOSE To determine risk factors and clinical signs that may differentiate between bacterial, fungal, and acanthamoeba keratitis among patients presenting with presumed infectious keratitis. DESIGN Hospital-based cross-sectional study. METHODS We examined the medical records of 115 patients with laboratory-proven bacterial keratitis, 115 patients with laboratory-proven fungal keratitis, an...

BACKGROUND The free-living amoebae Acanthamoeba spp. have been recognized as etiologic agents of amoebic encephalitis, keratitis, otitis, lung lesions and other skin infections mainly in immuno-compromised individuals. The purpose of this study is to detect the presence of Acanthamoeba in swimming pools in Egypt using a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) method. METHODS Water samples were collec...
