Xanthogranulomatous cystitis (XC) is a rare benign chronic inflammatory disease of unknown etiology. Curative treatment of XC requires surgical resection, and most of reported cases were treated by partial cystectomy. Here we describe a case with XC that was treated using transurethral resection.
We present an application of head-mounted display (HMD) to patient's self-monitoring of transurethral resection of bladder tumor (TURB). Six patients wore the HMD as an imaging monitor to view the operation in real-time during their TURB. Following the operation, the patients completed a questionnaire that evaluates understanding of the state of their disease and satisfaction with the HMD. As a...
We studied whether or not prophylactic use of antibiotics following transurethral resection of prostate (TUR-P) was needed. The subjects were 152 patients preoperatively passing sterile urine who underwent TUR-P. They were divided into three groups: 35 with no use of antibiotics (no prophylaxis group), 70 with one day use of antibiotics (one day-prophylaxis group) and 47 with use of antibiotics...
High-grade T1 bladder cancer has a poor prognosis due to a higher incidence of recurrence and progression than other nonmuscle invasive bladder cancer; thus patients with high-grade T1 have to be carefully monitored and managed. If patients are diagnosed with high-grade T1 at initial transurethral resection (TUR), a second TUR is strongly recommended regardless of whether muscle layer is presen...
The ability of patients to understand and recall information given prior to obtaining written consent was assessed in 55 patients who were due to undergo the operation of transurethral resection of prostate. The patients were also asked their opinion on informed consent. Most patients knew the position of the prostate and the purpose of the operation. Some aspects of the postoperative managemen...
We report a case of unusual presentation of transurethral resection of prostate (TURP) syndrome. A 58-year-old male patient with grade III benign hypertrophic hyperplasia was scheduled for TURP under spinal anesthesia. At 120 min of surgery, the patient presented with atypical symptoms of tightness in the chest with difficulty in breathing. The electrolyte analysis revealed an acute hyponatremi...
To the editor: The article by Tan et al. [1] is indeed interesting. This article is one of the rare reports about surgical risk factors associated with urethral stricture (US) occurrence after bipolar transurethral resection of prostate (B-TURP) using the Gyrus PlasmaKinetic Tissue Management System (Gyrus ACMI, Southborough, MA, USA). The results seem some interesting and were consistent with ...
CLINICAL PRESENTATION A 56-year-old Chinese male with previously diagnosed prostatic stromal tumour of uncertain malignant potential (STUMP) presented with urinary retention 6 years after transurethral resection of prostate (TURP). TREATMENT AND OUTCOME Cystoscopy showed a papillary tumour of the prostatic urethra causing near-complete obstruction. Repeat TURP was performed. He has been asymp...
BACKGROUND Levobupivacaine 0.5% and bupivacaine 0.5% were shown to be equally effective in spinal anaesthesia. In previous studies, low dose bupivacaine with an intrathecal opioid was used successfully in urological surgery. The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical effectiveness and block quality of low dose levobupivacaine, and compare it with low dose bupivacaine when they are combi...
The literature on antimicrobial prophylaxis in connection with transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) is reviewed, and it is concluded that there is no proof of clinically significant beneficial effect of prophylaxis when the urine is sterile preoperatively. Prophylaxis is indicated when bacteriuria or an indwelling urethral catheter is present at the time of operation. Other possible r...
