In this announcement, we report the complete genome and methylome sequences of three Salmonella enterica strains from the SARA and SARB collection: S. enterica subsp. enterica serovar Typhimurium (SARA13), S. enterica subsp. enterica serovar Saintpaul (SARA26), and S. enterica subsp. enterica serovar Stanleyville (SARB61).
Enteric fever, includes typhoid fever caused by Salmonella typhi and paratyphoid fever caused by S. enterica serovar Paratyphi A and is one of the most important febrile illnesses in tropical and subtropical countries, with high rates of morbidity and mortality. S. paratyphi A can be isolated from the blood and feces from paratyphoid fever patients (1, 2). In India, however Salmonella enterica ...
The neutral theory of molecular evolution predicts that variation within species is inversely related to the strength of purifying selection, but the strength of purifying selection itself must be related to physical constraints imposed by protein folding and function. In this paper, we analyzed five enzymes for which polymorphic sequence variation within Escherichia coli and/or Salmonella ente...
Free-living amoebae represent a potential reservoir and predator of Salmonella enterica. Through the use of type III secretion system (T3SS) mutants and analysis of transcription of selected T3SS genes, we demonstrated that the Salmonella pathogenicity island 2 is highly induced during S. enterica serovar Typhimurium infection of Acanthamoeba polyphaga and is essential for survival within amoebae.
Promoter-lux fusions that showed rifampin-modulated transcription were identified from a Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium 14028 reporter library. The transformation of a subset of fusions into mutants that lacked one of six global regulatory proteins or were rifampin resistant showed that transcription modulation was independent of the global regulators, promoter specific, and dependent ...
We report on novel mutations in the malK gene of Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium, encoding the ATPase subunit of the maltose transporter (MalFGK(2)). Biochemical analysis suggests that (i) L86 might be involved in a signaling step during substrate translocation and (ii) E306 may be critical for the structural integrity of the protein.
The gnd gene, the structural gene for 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase, was sequenced and analyzed in 34 isolates from different serovars of the seven subspecies of Salmonella enterica to provide comparative information on the evolution in this gene, which has been studied extensively in Escherichia coli. The gene tree obtained by the neighbor-joining method in general gave separate branches fo...
AIM This study was carried out to determine the prevalence, distribution, and identification of Salmonella serotypes in diarrheagenic infants and young animals, including sewage waste and fresh vegetables. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 550 samples were processed for the isolation of Salmonella spp., using standard microbiological and biochemical tests. Further polymerase chain reaction (PC...
A novel natural TEM beta-lactamase with extended-spectrum activity, TEM-138, was identified in a ceftazidime-resistant clinical isolate of Salmonella enterica serovar Infantis. Compared to TEM-1, TEM-138 contains the following mutations: E104K, N175I, and G238S. The bla(TEM-138) gene was located on a 50-kb transferable plasmid. Expression studies with Escherichia coli revealed efficient ceftazi...
Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica serovar Typhimurium strain YU39 was isolated in 2005 in the state of Yucatán, Mexico, from a human systemic infection. The YU39 strain is representative of the multidrug-resistant emergent sequence type 213 (ST213) genotype. The YU39 complete genome is composed of a chromosome and seven plasmids.
