This work features first asymmetric Ni-catalyzed reductive coupling of allylic carbonates with aldehydes, which may proceed via allyl-Ni intermediates although Zn was used as the terminal reductant. Moderate to excellent enantiomeric excess was obtained with excellent functional group tolerance.

In this communication we show that the instability of samarium diiodide (SmI(2)) in acetonitrile is a consequence of ionization of the reductant in this solvent. Samarium triflate (Sm(OTf)(2)) is exceptionally stable in acetonitrile for periods over six months and can be used with appropriate additives to initiate a ketyl-olefin coupling reaction in high yield.

This paper reports a complete ammonia borane (AB) regeneration process in which Bu3SnH was utilized as a reductant for the reductive dechlorination of BCl3, and Et2PhN was selected as a 'helper ligand' to generate Et2PhN·BH3, which gives rise to a high yield of AB by a base-exchange reaction at ambient temperature.

A one-step reduction and functionalization of graphene oxide (FrGO) was easily achieved using a novel phenylhydrazine-based reductant containing fluorine atoms, which can induce p-type doping due to its high electronegativity. The FrGO-based OPV exhibited a high power conversion efficiency of ∼6.71% and a superior OPV-stability to commercial PEDOT:PSS.

Gold nanoparticles on hydrotalcite act as a heterogeneous catalyst for the chemoselective hydrogenolysis of various allylic carbonates to the corresponding terminal alkenes using H(2) as a clean reductant. The combination of gold nanoparticles and basic supports elicited significantly unique and selective catalysis in the hydrogenolysis.

Ni-catalyzed ketone formation through mild reductive coupling of a diverse set of unactivated alkyl bromides and iodides with particularly aryl acid anhydrides was successfully developed using zinc as the terminal reductant.
