OBJECTIVE To investigate antibiotic prescribing patterns by general dental practitioners (GDPs) in the Greater Glasgow Health Board Area, Scotland. STUDY DESIGN A 10% sample of prescriptions were selected at random from 35,545 prescriptions written by GDPs over a 6-month period. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES Absolute and relative frequencies were used to describe the different classes of antibiotic...

Ramoplanin, a new lipoglycodepsipeptide antibiotic, was uniformly active against 65 strains of enterococci, including strains highly resistant to vancomycin, penicillin G, and gentamicin. MBCs were usually within a fourfold dilution of the MICs. In time-kill studies, ramoplanin alone demonstrated dose-dependent bactericidal activity against enterococcal strains that resisted killing by vancomyc...

Genital and anorectal isolates of Neisseria meningitidis were characterized, and their antimicrobial susceptibilities were determined. Twelve of 43 isolates demonstrated moderate susceptibility to penicillin G (MIC range, 0.125 to 0.5 microgram/ml). Two isolates were resistant to tetracycline (MIC, > or = 8 micrograms/ml) and contained plasmids of 25.2 MDa.

We compared Mycobacterium tuberculosis sputum culture recovery and contamination rates between Lowenstein-Jensen medium (LJ) containing the following decontaminants and LJ alone: (i) PANTA (n = 299), (ii) Selectatab-MB (n = 299), and (iii) penicillin G (n = 234). The contamination rate for LJ alone was approximately 31%, versus 5.0% for PANTA-containing, 2% for Selectatab-containing, and 9% for...

EXPERIMENTAL evaluation of ampicillin has proved that in animals this drug behaves like penicillin G in being rapidly excreted in high concentrations in the bile after oral, intramuscular and intravenous administration (Table I). The ratio of bile to blood (or serum) concentration varies with the species of animal, route of administration, dose, time and technique of sampling. However these res...

The in vitro susceptibility of 18 to 24 isolates of Neisseria gonorrhoea were tested against 12 different antimicrobial agents. These isolates represent all of the gonococcal organisms which had been isolated by the bacteriology laboratory of the Vermont State Department of Health from 1 March to 31 July 1972 and originated from patients cultured in Vermont. These isolates were considerably mor...

Results are reported from a study on drug use in treatment of children with pneumonia in a pediatric hospital in the city of Fortaleza, Northeastern Brazil. There were 171 out-patients; prescription details were obtained for 149. The most commonly prescribed antimicrobial drug was procaine penicillin, accounting for 33% of antimicrobial prescriptions, followed by benzathine penicillin (31%), am...

We describe 3 symptomatic cases of neurologic syphilis that occurred after the administration of the usual therapy for primary or secondary syphilis in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected patients. We discuss the difficulty of diagnosing neurosyphilis, the need for lumbar puncture, and risk factors of relapse. Because HIV infection may alter the natural history and response of neurologi...

There are few data on antibiotic resistance of Streptococcus pneumoniae in Algeria. Among 309 strains, 34.6% were penicillin G-nonsusceptible S. pneumoniae strains (25.2% were intermediate and 9.4% were resistant). Serotypes 1, 5, 14, and 6 were the most frequent in invasive child infections. A multicenter study to standardize the national guidelines is needed.

OBJECTIVES AND METHODS The new fluoroquinolones WCK 771, WCK 1152 and WCK 1153 were developed to overcome quinolone resistance in Gram-positive bacteria. The activity of these new quinolones was tested against 159 clinical isolates of Streptococcus pneumoniae and 52 clinical isolates of Streptococcus pyogenes using the microbroth dilution method. RESULTS MIC50/MIC90 values (mg/L) of WCK 771, ...
