We present a method for the visualization of volumetric caustics in single-scattering participating media. The caustics beams are generated from a projected grid in light’s image space, making the solution independent from the geometric complexity of generators. The caustic volumes are extruded in the geometry shader and accumulated into the final volumetric effect.

The development of social media applications, such as blogs, Facebook and Twitter, has offered new participatory opportunities for everyday media users. This article contributes to research by looking into one specific aspect of the increasingly more participatory media ecology – the news comment feature. Drawing on a quantitative content analysis of 1100 news pieces, as well as spaces for user...

Visibility determination is one of the fundamental building blocks of photorealistic image synthesis. Light reflected at a shading point depends on light reflected from the visible scene surfaces and on the visible light sources in the environment. However, computing visibility is computational highly demanding and global illumination algorithms, such as final gathering and bias compensation fo...

ABSTRACT The domain partition for the construction of a natural base is presented in order to solve the inverse problem of absorption coefficient estimation from the available measurements (experimental noisy data) of transmitted radiation. Within the framework of Lebesgue measure, a family of reconstruction algorithms is constructed based on Bregman distances using a q-discrepancy functional. ...

Photo-realistic rendering of inhomogeneous participating media with light scattering in consideration is important in computer graphics, and is typically computed using Monte Carlo based methods. The key technique in such methods is the free path sampling, which is used for determining the distance (free path) between successive scattering events. Recently, it has been shown that efficient and ...

The authors develop a framework for the design of tools to mediate collaboration intended to lead to learning. We identify two categories of media that are common in computer-supported collaborative learning and software in general: communication media and information media. These two types of media are then mapped onto two types of social activities in which learning is grounded: dialogue and ...

The Web 2.0 has permeated academic life. The use of online information services in post-secondary education has led to dramatic changes in faculty teaching methods as well as in the learning and study behavior of students. At the same time, traditional information media, such as textbooks and printed handouts, still form the basic pillars of teaching and learning. This paper reports the results...

Rendering the interaction between light and microscopic particles in a scene, such as smoke or floating dust, has traditionally been a computationally intensive and difficult process. To produce an accurate rendering requires simulation, or reasonably accurate approximation, of how the light interacts with these particles on a fine level of detail. Specifically, when light enters an area of som...

A recent technique that forms virtual ray lights (VRLs) from path segments in media, reduces the artifacts common to VPL approaches in participating media, however, distracting singularities still remain. We present Virtual Beam Lights (VBLs), a progressive many-lights algorithm for rendering complex indirect transport paths in, from, and to media. VBLs are efficient and can handle heterogeneou...

We present a new approach to illuminate and render single scattering effects in heterogeneous participating media in real time. The medium’s density is modeled as a sum of radial basis functions, and is then sampled into a first volumetric grid. We then integrate the extinction function from each light source to each cell in the volume by a fast cell-to-cell propagation process on the GPU, and ...
