To investigate how top-down (TD) and bottom-up (BU) information is weighted in the guidance of human search behavior, we manipulated the proportions of BU and TD components in a saliency-based model. The model is biologically plausible and implements an artificial retina and a neuronal population code. The BU component is based on feature-contrast. The TD component is defined by a feature-templ...

Previous research on automatic image annotation has shown that accurate estimates of the class conditional densities in generative models have a positive effect in annotation performance. We focus on the problem of density estimation in the context of automatic image annotation and propose a novel Bayesian hierarchical method for estimating mixture models of Gaussian components. The proposed me...

We propose a fully automatic framework to detect and extract arbitrary human motion volumes from real-world videos collected from YouTube. Our system is composed of two stages. A person detector is first applied to provide crude information about the possible locations of humans. Then a constrained clustering algorithm groups the detections and rejects false positives based on the appearance si...

Due to advances in experimental techniques wehave seen a vast increase in exciting new datareflecting the spatio-temporal aspects of life onthe molecular level. It augments static informa-tion about DNA sequences, transcripts and pro-teins and their interactions. The integration ofthese heterogeneous sources of data in order toarrive at conclusive information about a...

This paper describes two separate sets of speaker identi cation experiments. In the rst set of experiments, the speech spectrum is selectively used for speaker identi cation. The results show that the higher portion of the speech spectrum contains more reliable idiosyncratic information on speakers than does the lower portion of equal bandwidth. In the second set of experiments, a vector-quanti...

Dynamic modulus characterizes the viscoelastic behavior of asphalt materials and is the most important input parameter for design and rehabilitation of flexible pavements using Mechanistic–Empirical Pavement Design Guide (MEPDG). Laboratory determination of dynamic modulus is very expensive and time consuming. To overcome this challenge, several predictive models were developed to determine dyn...

In this paper, a new design algorithm for estimating the parameters of Gaussian Mixture Models is presented. The method is based on the matching pursuit algorithm. Speaker Identification is considered as an application area. The estimated GMM performs as good as the EM algorithm based model. Computational complexity of the proposed method is much lower than the EM algorithm.

An engineered cementitious composite (ECC) suitable for wet-mixture shotcreting (sprayable ECC) in the fresh state, while maintaining tensile strain-hardening behavior in the hardened state, has been developed by employing a parallel control of micro-mechanics-and rheology-based design. In the development concept of sprayable ECC, micromechanics is adopted to properly select the matrix, fiber, ...

Bed bugs, (Cimex lectularius L.), are difficult to find because of their nocturnal and secretive behavior. In recent years, a number of monitors containing carbon dioxide (CO2), chemical lures, heat, or both, to attract bed bugs have been developed for detecting bed bugs. Ineffective trap design, lack of attraction of chemical lures, high cost of the CO2 delivery system, or insufficient CO rele...
