Crossed cerebellar diaschisis and bright pulvinar are rare in patients with status epilepticus. We present a case of a 53-year-old man who was found confused, incontinent, and nonverbal. The EEG findings were consistent with non-convulsive status epilepticus. The brain MR images showed findings consistent with crossed cerebellar diaschisis and bright pulvinar. We report and discuss this case to...

Tiagabine, a novel GABA reuptake inhibitor, has been reported to induce non-convulsive status epilepticus (NCSE) in patients with epilepsy. We report a 27 year old female with history of pseudoseizure documented by video-EEG monitoring who presented confusion while on 56 mg per day of tiagabine. Electroencephalography showed generalized sharp and slow wave discharges, consistent with NCSE. The ...

Subacute encephalopathy with seizures in chronic alcoholism (SESA) was first described in 1981 by Niedermeyer who reported alcoholic patients presenting with confusion, seizures and focal neurological deficits and is quite distinct from patients presenting with typical alcohol withdrawal seizures. EEG often reveals periodic discharges and spikes, but SESA presenting with non-convulsive status e...

Seizures are a symptom and not a disease. A seizure is the result of an abnormal electrical discharge of a collection or group of living but damaged or abnormal neurons. When the group of neurons is in the cerebral cortex, a focal or partial seizure occurs , producing abnormal activity related to that part of the brain. The victim may experience a focal jerking or focal numbness, or flashing li...

We describe the failure of an intravenous benzodiazepine to control non-convulsive status epilepticus occurring in six patients with the Lennox-Gastaut syndrome. In one patient the benzodiazepine induced a paradoxical response with clinical and electroencephalographic seizures.
