background & objectives: pseudomonas aeruginosais one of the most important causes of nosocomial infections particularly in immunodeficient patients. several antibiotics such as betalactams, aminoglycosides and quinolones are used for the treatment of infections caused by this organism, but the prevalence of multidrug resistant strains has been reported frequently. beta lactamase production is ...
The caspofungin susceptibilities of 28 Candida sp. clinical isolates, including 8 caspofungin-resistant isolates characterized by mutations in the Fks1 protein, were determined by the Etest in RPMI and AM3 media. Good discrimination between wild-type and mutant isolates was obtained. These results suggest that the Etest is valuable for the detection of caspofungin resistance in Candida spp.
MICs of daptomycin, linezolid, and vancomycin against 212 isolates, including Listeria monocytogenes and Pediococcus, Leuconostoc, Rhodococcus, and Nocardia spp., were determined by the broth microdilution method; daptomycin MICs were also determined by the Etest. Except with those for Leuconostoc spp., daptomycin Etest MICs showed >90% agreement with MICs obtained by the broth microdilution me...
MICs of antibiotics against Bilophila wadsworthia isolates were measured by agar and broth microdilution with pyruvic acid and by Etest. The inoculum size influenced greatly agar dilution. Despite discrepancies in MICs depending on the measurement method used, clindamycin consistently showed potent activity. Broth microdilution and Etest appear to be candidates for laboratory susceptibility tes...
BACKGROUND Yeasts are a common cause of invasive fungal infections in critically ill patients. Antifungal susceptibility testing results of clinically significant fungal strains are of interest to physicians, enabling them to adopt appropriate strategies for empiric and prophylactic therapies. We investigated the antifungal susceptibility of yeasts isolated over a 2-year period from hospitalise...
OBJECTIVES In vitro susceptibility testing of 31 Bartonella spp. strains including 21 Bartonella henselae isolates was performed for 17 antimicrobial agents (telithromycin, four macrolides, five fluoroquinolones, five aminoglycosides, doxycycline and rifampicin). METHODS MICs were determined by agar dilution and Etest using chocolate agar containing 5% defibrinated sheep blood as assay medium...
BACKGROUND Drug resistant tuberculosis (TB) is a growing concern worldwide. Rapid detection of resistance expedites appropriate intervention to control the disease. Several technologies have recently been reported to detect rifampicin resistant Mycobacterium tuberculosis directly in sputum samples. These include phenotypic culture based methods, tests for gene mutations and tests based on bacte...
BACKGROUND The development of hVISA has been associated with vancomycin clinical failures and is commonly misidentified in clinical microbiology laboratories. Therefore, the objectives of this present study was to improve the reliability of methodologies and criteria for identifying hVISA, evaluate the prevalence of hVISA among clinical bloodstream isolates of S. aureus and determine if there e...
Haemophilus influenzae is a major pathogen, and beta-lactams are first-line drugs. Resistance due to altered penicillin-binding protein 3 (rPBP3) is frequent, and susceptibility testing of such strains is challenging. A collection of 154 beta-lactamase-negative isolates with a large proportion of rPBP3 (67.5%) was used to evaluate and compare Etest (Haemophilus test medium [HTM]) and disk diffu...
