In contrast with the 6 Group B Coxsackie viruses which readily induce a cytopathic effect (CPE) in tissue cultures, many of the Group A viruses have either failed to alter visibly cells propagated in cultural systems, or have required "adaptation" for such an effect. In the course of studies made during the last two years we have obtained CPE on primate cells cultured in vitro for all except 7 ...

The vesicular stomatitis virus cytopathic effect reduction assay is suitable to quantify polyethylene glycol-alpha interferon 2a (PEG-IFN-alpha 2a) and PEG-IFN-alpha 2b. Human serum and ribavirin did not interfere with the assay. This bioassay was successfully used for assaying PEG-IFN-alpha 2a and PEG-IFN-alpha 2b in serum samples from patients undergoing combination therapy.

Kidney cells were cultured in vitro from nonhibernating thirteen-lined ground squirrels (Citellus tridecemlineatus). These primary ground squirrel kidney cultures were tested for the ability to support the replication of 13 viruses representing nine virus groups. The cultures were shown to be susceptible to every virus tested, either by an increase in infectious virus or by the cytopathic effec...

A panel of reovirus strains was used to compare myocarditic potential with induction of cytopathic effect in primary cardiac myocyte and cardiac fibroblast cultures. The results suggest that viral cytopathogenicity in cardiac myocytes, but not in cardiac fibroblasts, is a determinant of reoviral myocarditis.

A microneutralization test in PK(15) cells was developed to measure the neutralizing antibody response of a group of ponies experimentally challenged with louping ill virus. Viral cytopathic effect was maximal after 6 days of incubation, at which point titration endpoints were clear-cut and readily determinable. The assay compared favorably with the mouse neutralization test for accuracy and ea...

Homogenates of gut and mesenteric lymph node tissue from patients with Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, and control patients were tested for cytopathic effect (CPE) production in a series of cell lines including rabbit ileal and W138 cells. A CPE was produced in W138 cells by tissue homogenates from patients with Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, and control patients. Evidence was obtain...

The production of antitoxin after Clostridium difficile-induced diarrhoea has not been reported previously. The stool of a patient with prolonged antibiotic-associated diarrhoea contained C. difficile toxin, and the serum neutralised the cytopathic effect of C. difficile toxin in tissue culture.

Infection with molluscum contagiosum virus, a poxvirus, normally has a typical clinical presentation; therefore, laboratory confirmation is infrequently sought and the virus is rarely isolated in culture. As reported herein, viral culture of specimens from atypical lesions may produce an abortive infection in limited cell lines and a cytopathic effect suggestive of herpes simplex virus.

A convenient assay for interferons based on reduction of cytopathic effect was developed. The number of manipulations and the lengths of the various incubation steps were reduced to a minimum. The assay is simple to perform and can be completed within 16 h. Moreover, it can be used with various types of cells and a variety of viruses.
