In this work we present a simple estimation procedure for a general frailty model for analysis of prospective correlated failure times. Earlier work showed this method to perform well in a simulation study. Here we provide rigorous large-sample theory for the proposed estimators of both the regression coefficient vector and the dependence parameter, including consistent variance estimators.
Three correlated frailty models are used to analyze bivariate timeto-event data by assuming gamma, log-normal and compound Poisson distributed frailty. All approaches allow to deal with right censored lifetime data and account for heterogeneity as well as for a non-susceptible (cure) fraction in the study population. In the gamma and compound Poisson model traditional ML estimation methods are ...
Atrial fibrillation (AF) and sinoatrial node (SAN) dysfunction are highly prevalent in elderly individuals; however, aging is also heterogenous. This heterogeneity has led to the concept of ‘frailty’, a state increased vulnerability adverse health outcomes aging. Mild caloric restriction (CR; reducing intake without malnutrition) can preserve cardiac function improve frailty (healthspan); effec...
SUMMARY Preoperative frailty predicts adverse postoperative outcomes. Recommendations for preoperative assessment of elderly patients include performing a frailty assessment. Despite the advantages of incorporating frailty assessment into surgical settings, there is limited research on surgical health care professionals' perception and use of frailty assessment for perioperative care. We survey...
BackgroundOral health is important for maintaining general and associated with components of physical frailty among the elderly. Oral problems are common in hospitalized patients; however, no reports on oral pertain to patients cardiovascular diseases (CVD). The present study aimed evaluate association between these patients.MethodsIn this retrospective cohort study, we included consecutive adm...
Frailty is a vulnerable situation among older adults which can lead to unfavorable health outcomes such as falls, mortality, functional decline and institutionalization. The increasing number of elderly people and low rate of mortality has necessitated the need for high-quality medical services for this aging population, and this has led to a high cost of geriatric health care. There exist a hu...
Socioeconomic inequalities in frailty and frailty components among community-dwelling older citizens
BACKGROUND So far, it has not yet been studied whether socioeconomic status is associated with distinct frailty components and for which frailty component this association is the strongest. We aimed to examine the association between socioeconomic status and frailty and frailty components. In addition we assessed the mediating effect of the number of morbidities on the association between socio...
This study aims to analyze which determinants predict frailty in general and each frailty domain (physical, psychological, and social), considering the integral conceptual model of frailty, and particularly to examine the contribution of medication in this prediction. A cross-sectional study was designed using a non-probabilistic sample of 252 community-dwelling elderly from three Portuguese ci...
BACKGROUND Many definitions of frailty exist, but few have been directly compared. We compared the relationship between a definition of frailty based on a specific phenotype with one based on an index of deficit accumulation. METHODS The data come from all 2305 people 70 years old and older who composed the clinical examination cohort of the second wave of the Canadian Study of Health and Agi...
