We demonstrated the marked emergence of resistance to ciprofloxacin among Staphylococcus arueus strains isolated at the Ann Arbor Veterans Administration Medical Center. All S. aureus isolates tested from 1984 to 1985 were susceptible, whereas 55.1% of methicillin-resistant and 2.5% of methicillin-susceptible strains from 1989 had high-level resistance to ciprofloxacin.

The aim of the research was the determination of resistance to fluoroquinolones (ciprofloxacin and enrofloxacin) of 387 Campylobacter sp. strains isolated from poultry between 1994-1996 (broilers, laying hens) and between 2005-2008 (broilers, laying hens, and turkeys). The resistance was determined by an agar dilution method (MIC), with accordance to Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute ...

The aim of this study was to evaluate the value of nalidixic acid resistance as an indicator of decreased susceptibility to ciprofloxacin (MIC = 0.125 - 1 mg/L) in Salmonella isolates from humans (n = 620) in Turkey. One isolate was found to be resistant, and the remaining isolates were susceptible to ciprofloxacin with the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute breakpoints; however, 75 is...

AIM To analyse mutations in the gyrA and parC genes leading to possible increase in ciprofloxacin resistance (high MIC values for ciprofloxacin) in clinical isolates of Neisseria gonorrhoeae in Delhi, India. METHOD MIC of ciprofloxacin for 63 clinical isolates of N gonorrhoeae were examined by the Etest method. Subsequently, gyrA and parC genes of these isolates were amplified and sequenced f...

Background and Aim: Infection by drug resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa causes important therapeutic problems. The present study was performed to investigate the antibiotic susceptibility and prevalence of antimicrobial resistance genes in P. aeruginosa. Materials and Methods: In this cross sectional study, 61 clinical P. aeruginosa isolates were collected in Sanandaj between April and September...

We report here the draft genome sequences of 15 ciprofloxacin-resistant Salmonella enterica strains with resistance to multiple other antibiotics, including aminoglycosides, β-lactams, sulfonamides, tetracycline, and trimethoprim, isolated from different imported foods. Three strains (NCTR75, NCTR281, and NCTR350) showed a high level of ciprofloxacin resistance compared to that of the other iso...

The incidence of ciprofloxacin resistance in Streptococcus pneumoniae is low but steadily increasing, which raises concerns regarding the clinical impact of potential cross-resistance with newer fluoroquinolones. To investigate this problem, we utilized an in vitro pharmacodynamic model and compared the activities of gatifloxacin, grepafloxacin, levofloxacin, moxifloxacin, and trovafloxacin to ...

Plasmid-mediated qnr genes provide only a modest decrease in quinolone susceptibility but facilitate the selection of higher-level resistance. In Escherichia coli strain J53 without qnr, ciprofloxacin resistance often involves mutations in the GyrA subunit of DNA gyrase. Mutations in gyrA were absent, however, when 43 mutants with decreased ciprofloxacin susceptibility were selected from J53(pM...

To the Editor: Ciprofloxacin is the treatment of choice of severe non-typhoidal Salmonella infections in adults. Resistance to ciprofloxacin has been found exceptionally in nonty-phoidal Salmonella enterica isolates and only in serotypes Typhimurium, Choleraesuis, and Schwarzengrund (1–8). Such isolates have been collected from humans and animals in Europe, Asia, and North America. We report th...

Between 2000 and 2006 the sum of ciprofloxacin and folic acid antagonists prescriptions to Bavarian (South-eastern Gemany) outpatients stayed constant. However, prescription numbers of ciprofloxacin increased while those of folic acid antagonists decreased suggesting an apparent shift in the treatment of urinary infections toward ciprofloxacin. During the observation period the proportion of E....
