Headwater streams constitute the majority of watersheds in the United States and many in the midwest have been channelized for agricultural drainage. Public health implications of water chemistry and aquatic insects within channelized and unchannelized headwater streams have not been explored. We sampled water chemistry and aquatic insects in two channelized and two unchannelized headwater stre...

There is no systematic way to define the optimal topology of an artificial neural network for a given task. Heuristic methods, such as genetic algorithms, have been widely used to determine the number of neurons and the connectivity required for specific applications. However, artificial evolution uses to be highly time-consuming, making it unsuitable for on-line execution. Herein we present a ...

This paper presents a novel N-ocular 3D reconstruction algorithm for eventbased vision data from bio-inspired artificial retina sensors. Artificial restinas capture visual information asynchronously and encode it into streams of asynchronous spike-like pulse signals carrying information on e.g. temporal contrast events in the scene. The precise time of the occurence of these visual features are...

Biofiltration is one of the air pollution control technologies that utilizes the microorganisms to biologically degrade Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) and odor contained in waste air streams. The microorganism exists on the surface and in a thin water film surrounding the surface of biofilter material and degrades the pollutants present in the fluid. This method is distinguished from other b...

We develop a vision system for highly mobile autonomous agents that is capable of dynamic obstacle avoidance and active perception. We demonstrate the robust performance of the system in artificial animals with directable, foveated eyes, situated in physics-based virtual worlds. Through active perception, each agent controls its eyes and body by continuously analyzing photorealistic binocular r...

The vnode interface has succeeded in supporting a wide range of file system implementations over its 6-year history. During that time it has also had to accommodate evolution in file system semantics, and in the relationship between the file system and the virtual memory system. The effects of this evolution have been less than elegant, and pressures for further evolution are mounting. The evol...

The concentrations and relative abundances of aquatic hyphomycete conidia in water were followed during a three-year study in two headwater streams at Coweeta Hydrologic Laboratory, North Carolina, using the membrane-filtration technique. After a one-year pretreatment period, one of the streams was enriched continuously with inorganic nutrients (N+P) for two years while the other stream served ...

The male sex of Tyloridasataraensis Kulkarni, 2014 is described based on specimens from the type locality. The distinguishing characters from its closest species Tyloridaventralis (Thorell, 1877) are detailed. An interesting behaviour of going underwater by T.sataraensis, on disturbance is recorded and tested for significance. The surveys have shown sighting of this species only to the perennia...

This paper describes a new idea of rapid protocol implementation starting from its formal specification, namely to generate Unix STREAMS modules. We have exercised this idea using Estelle formal specification technique. The generator was written for Linux system. The paper demonstrates how the semantic problems were resolved and gives some conclusions from generations we have performed.

According to the ISO-IEC 9126-1 standard [5], interoperability is a software functionality sub-characteristic defined as “the capability of the software product to interact with one or more specified systems”. In order to interact with other systems a DLBS must conform to the standard input formats and must be able to perform standard inference services. In our setting, the standard input forma...
