The reactivation of the hepatitis B virus (HBV) following systemic chemotherapy reportedly caused acute liver dysfunction as a fatal complication. HBV sometimes occurs even after cessation chemotherapy, especially in patients with hematological malignancies. A retrospective survey surface (HBs) antigen-negative cancer HBs and/or HBc antibodies was conducted by multidisciplinary team to determin...

To determine the physiological role of estrogen in the development of liver injury, we examined the sensitivities of sham and ovariectomy (ovx) mice against doxycycline (DOXY)-induced acute liver injury. Ovx or sham operation was performed in C57BL/6J wild-type female mice of eight weeks of age. Sham mice and ovx mice were treated with DOXY (240 mg/kg ip) 8 weeks after the operation, 30 min aft...

Evaluation of abnormal liver function tests (LFTs) in the hospitalized patient is typically more urgent than the outpatient setting. This process is best organized into four steps. The first step is to determine whether the abnormal LFTs are associated with the illness resulting in the admission to the hospital or preceded the present illness. The second is to determine the etiology of the unde...

Biotinidase is an enzyme synthesized predominantly by the liver. Serum activity of this enzyme has been shown to be low in chronic liver disease. In this study, we endeavored to assess the diagnostic value of serum biotinidase as a marker of hepatic biosynthetic function in acute and chronic liver dysfunction. Twenty-three patients with acute liver disease and 46 with chronic liver disease, as ...

Background: Interleukin-17 (IL-17), as a potent proinflammatory cytokine, has a critical role in post liver transplant outcomes. However, there is not much information about the effects of IL-17 cytokine on acute liver rejection. Objective: To evaluate the role of IL-17 in post-liver transplant acute rejection. Methods: Ninety seven adult liver transplant patients who enrolled in this cross sec...

A three-fold decrease of the in vitro ability of serum proteins to bind naproxen was shown in patients with cirrhosis of the liver compared to healthy individuals. This decrease was caused by quantitative changes in serum proteins in the sera of patients with liver damage. Lower doses of naproxen are therefore suggested in the treatment of patients with liver dysfunction.

The liver has evolved to become a highly plastic organ with extraordinary regenerative capabilities. What drives liver regeneration is still being debated. Adult liver stem/progenitor cells have been characterized and used to produce functional hepatocytes and biliary cells in vitro. However, in vivo, numerous studies have questioned whether hepatic progenitor cells have a significant role in l...

Abstract   Background: Sacroiliac joint (SIJ) dysfunction is a widely known but poorly defined   cause of low back pain. To our knowledge, few published studies have been   conducted to evaluate systematically the prevalence and significance of concomitant   sacroiliac joint dysfunction in patients with herniated lumbar discs. As concomitant   SIJ dysfunction in low back pain patients is like...
