BACKGROUND In surface antigen of hepatitis B virus (HBsAg)-positive carrier for anticancer treatment of malignant lymphoma, it is well recognized that reactivation of hepatitis B virus (HBV) occasionally occurs. However, there have been only a few studies of HBV reactivation in serum HBsAg-negative and hepatitis B core antigen (HBcAb)-positive occult HBV carriers. We looked at both retrospectiv...

Host signal-transduction pathways are intimately involved in the switch between latency and productive infection of herpes viruses. As with other herpes viruses, infection by Kaposi's sarcoma herpesvirus (KSHV) displays these two phases. During latency only few viral genes are expressed, while in the productive infection the virus is reactivated with initiation of extensive viral DNA replicatio...

Vaginal proinflammatory cytokine expression during herpes virus reactivation was examined in human immunodeficiency virus-infected women before and after initiation of antiretroviral therapy (ART). Vaginal swabs were screened for levels of cytokines interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-2, IL-4, IL-6, IL-8, IL-10, IL-12p70, IL-13, tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, and interferon-γ. The relative risk (RR) of her...

Alpha/beta interferon (IFN-alpha/beta) protects the host from virus infection by inhibition of lytic virus replication in infected cells and modulation of the antiviral cell-mediated immune response. To determine whether IFN-alpha/beta also modulates the virus-host interaction during latent virus infection, we infected mice lacking the IFN-alpha/beta receptor (IFN-alpha/betaR(-/-)) and wild-typ...

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) reactivation in patients with resolved HBV infection was found in 23 (4%) of 552 newly hepatitis B surface antigen-positive patients in Japan. Because one-fourth of cases develop into fulminant hepatic failure and mortality is 100%, management of HBV reactivation in patients with resolved HBV infection should be discussed.

Reactivation of hepatitis B virus (HBV) is a risk in the 350 million HBV carriers worldwide. HBV reactivation may cause hepatocellular carcinoma, cirrhosis, and fulminant hepatitis, and HBV reactivation accompanied with malignant tumor and/or chemotherapy is a critical problem for the patients with chronic HBV infection. In addition, multiple risk factors causing immunosuppressive state can als...

We studied 51 consecutive pediatric patients for the frequency and morbidity of viral infections after liver transplantation. The incidence of primary (67%) and reactivation (48%) Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infections and reactivation (88%) cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection was comparable to that seen in adult transplant recipients. However, fewer pediatric than adult transplant recipients experien...

We previously showed that the LAT function required for efficient spontaneous reactivation of herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) from neuronal latency in the rabbit maps within the first 1.5 kb of the 8.3-kb primary LAT transcript. This demonstrated that LAT does not function via an antisense mechanism, since the first 1.5 kb of LAT does not overlap any other known HSV-1 gene. Furthermore, if ...

Reactivation of latent Varicella-Zoster virus may cause various neurological complications including meningitis, encephalitis, myelitis, vasculopathy resulting in stroke and pseudotumor cerebri. It occurs mainly in elderly or immunocompromised patients and is very rare in children. We report a 4-year and 6-months old immunocompetent boy who developed encephalitis and cerebellites, due to reacti...
