This paper addresses the rendering of single scattering effects such as glows and shafts of light, along with volumetric shadows induced by shadow casters in the participating media in real-time. Our method is easy to integrate in a video game graphics engine using the shadow volume technique since it requires only a little additional texture memory and is implemented with simple shaders. Reali...

We consider real-time rendering of scenes in participating media, capturing the effects of light scattering in fog, mist and haze. While a number of sophisticated approaches based on Monte Carlo and finite element simulation have been developed, those methods do not work at interactive rates. The most common real-time methods are essentially simple variants of the OpenGL fog model. While easy t...

Based on work in media studies, new literacy studies, applied linguistics, the arts and empirical research on the experiences of urban youths’ informal media arts practices we articulate a new vision for media education in the digital age that encompasses new genres, convergence, media mixes, and participation. We first outline the history of how students’ creative production has been used to m...

This paper presents an efficient algorithm to sample free path in inhomogeneous participating media. The method is based on the concept of mixing “virtual” particles to the medium, that complete the extinction coefficient to a piece-wise constant function. We use the sampling formulae developed for piece-wise homogeneous medium, but decide randomly whether a real or a virtual particle is hit.

M-Views is a system for creating and participating in context-sensitive, mobile cinematic narratives. A Map Agent detects participant location in 802.11 enabled space and triggers a location appropriate video message which is sent context -aware systems, participatory media, wireless indoor location awareness, mobile cinema, storytelling

Realistic rendering of participating media like clouds requires multiple anisotropic light scattering. This paper presents a propagation approximation for light scattered into M direction bins, which reduces the \ray eeect" problem in the traditional \discrete ordinates" method. For a regular grid volume of n 3
