The syntheses, magnetochemistry and crystallography of [Fe(L1)2]I0.5[I3]1.5 (1), [Fe(L1)2][Co(C2B9H11)2]2 (2) and [Fe(L2)2][SbF6]2 (3) (L1 = 2,6-di(pyrazol-1-yl)pyridine; L2 = 2,6-di(3-methylpyrazol-1-yl)pyridine) are described. Compounds 1 and 3 are high-spin between 5-300 K. For 1, this reflects a novel variation of an angular Jahn-Teller distortion at the iron centre, which traps the molecul...

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE This article presents the results of an anthropological and ethnobotanical study of the vegetable salts used by the Witoto Indians of the Amazon. It thoroughly documents the species used, the processing of the salts, their chemical composition and their anthropological, nutritional and medicinal relevance. MATERIALS AND METHODS Salts from 57 plant species known ...

The biferrocene-based salt [Bifc]2[Ni(mnt)2]3 (Bifc = bis(isopropylthio)biferrocene; mnt = maleonitriledithiolate) contains a biferrocenium monocation and dication within the same crystal. The coexistence of Fe(3+) and mixed-valence Fe(2.5+), which resembles the valence state of magnetite, was confirmed by Mössbauer spectroscopy.

It is generally accepted that, in the absence of bleeding or pregnancy, approximately 1 mg. of iron is lost per day from the body (1-11). As a corollary, the quantity of iron in the body is largely determined by the amount of iron absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract. Fundamental knowledge of iron absorption has been obtained by balance studies (2, 4, 12-18), by determination of the increas...

Iron- and nickel-substituted decaniobates, [H2Fe(III)Nb9O28](6-) and [H3Ni(II)Nb9O(28)](6-) were hydrothermally synthesized as tetramethylammonium salts and the structures were determined by X-ray crystallography. The highly soluble title compounds were characterized by ESI-MS, FT-IR and UV-Vis titration.

Fe(III)-meso-tetra(pyridyl)porphyrins are electrocatalysts for the reduction of dioxygen in aqueous acidic solution. The 2-pyridyl derivatives, both the triflate and chloride salts, are more selective for the desired 4e(-) reduction than the isomeric 4-pyridyl complexes. The inward-pointing pyridinium groups influence proton delivery despite their distance from the iron centre.

The catalyst system prepared in situ from iron(III) salts, tris(2-pyridylmethyl)amine and a base readily catalyses the intradiol dioxygenation of pyrocatechol in methanol, to primarily afford the half-methyl ester of muconic acid. Dimethyl adipate is obtained by the subsequent, one-step catalytic hydrogenation/esterification, thus providing a green route to this important nylon precursor.

A new solid medium is described for growing iron and heterotrophic bacteria from acid mine drainage (AMD). Examination of AMD from five states revealed several kinds of colonies of iron-oxidizing bacteria: (i) smooth, (ii) smooth with secondary growth sectors or branching, (iii) star-shaped, (iv) radiating lobe, and (v) flat-rough. All AMD samples yielded whitish colonies that could not use fer...

This study reports increasing iron concentrations in rivers draining into the Baltic Sea. Given the decisive role of iron to the structure and biogeochemical function of aquatic ecosystems, this trend is likely one with far reaching consequences to the receiving system. What those consequences may be depends on the fate of the iron in estuarine mixing. We here assess the stability of riverine i...

Levels of adherence of Trichomonas vaginalis to epithelial cells was found to be modulated by iron. Cytoadherence values were greater than or equal to twofold higher for trichomonads grown in a complex cultivation medium supplemented with iron. This increase in adherence levels was specifically mediated by iron; parasites cultured in a low-iron medium in the presence of salts other than iron we...
