The advent of microfabricated ion traps for the quantum information community has allowed research groups to build traps that incorporate an unprecedented number of trapping zones. However, as device complexity has grown, the number of digital-to-analog converter (DAC) channels needed to control these devices has grown as well, with some of the largest trap assemblies now requiring nearly one h...

Microwave llequency standards based on room temperature ‘~g+ ions in a Linear Ion Trap (LITS) presently achieve a Signal to Noise and line Q inferred short term frequency stability of uY(~)= 2x 10-14/T ln. Long term stability has been measured for averaging intervals up to S months with apparent sensitivity to variations in ion number/temperature limiting the flicker floor to about 5x 10’6 at 1...

Tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS) plays an essential role in modern chemical analysis. It is used for differentiating isomers and isobars and suppressing chemical noise, which allows high precision quantitation. The MS/MS analysis has been typically applied by isolating the target precursor ions, while disregarding other ions, followed by a fragmentation process that produces the product ions. I...

As part of a new heavy ion preinjector that will supply beams for the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration Space Radiation Laboratory, construction of a new electron beam ion source (EBIS) is now being completed. This source, based on the successful prototype Brookhaven National Laboratory Test EBIS, is designed to produce milliampere level curre...

Excited state dynamics of deprotonated and protonated fluorescein were investigated by polarization dependent femtosecond time-resolved pump-probe photofragmentation in a 3D ion trap. Transients of deprotonated fluorescein exhibit vibrational wavepacket dynamics with weak polarization dependence. Transients of protonated fluorescein show only effects of molecular alignment and rotational dephas...

Gates acting on more than two qubits are appealing as they can substitute complex sequences of two-qubit gates, thus promising faster execution and higher fidelity. One important multiqubit operation is the quantum Toffoli gate that performs a controlled NOT operation on a target qubit depending on the state of two control qubits. Here we present the first experimental realization of the quantu...

We propose a new concept for a two-qubit gate operating on a pair of trapped ions based on laser coherent control techniques. The gate is insensitive to the temperature of the ions, works also outside the Lamb-Dicke regime, requires no individual addressing by lasers, and can be orders of magnitude faster than the trap period, which is presently the speed limit of all two-qubit proposals.

We investigate in detail the effects of a QND vibrational number measurement made on single ions in a recently proposed measurement scheme for the vibrational state of a register of ions in a linear rf trap [C. D’Helon and G. J Milburn, Phys. Rev. A 54, 5141 (1996)]. The performance of a measurement shows some interesting patterns which are closely related to searching. Typeset using REVTEX 1

The atomic mass of Li has been measured using a Penning-ion-trap mass spectrometer to be 6.015 122 795~16! u. The fractional measurement uncertainty of 62.7310 represents a 30-fold improvement over that of the accepted published value. External ion sources were used to create ions outside the cryogenic ~4 K! environment of the Penning trap and an ion-transport beamline was used to deliver ions ...

We demonstrate single-qubit operations by transporting a beryllium ion with a controlled velocity through a stationary laser beam. We use these to perform coherent sequences of quantum operations, and to perform parallel quantum logic gates on two ions in different processing zones of a multiplexed ion trap chip using a single recycled laser beam. For the latter, we demonstrate individually add...
