OBJECTIVES To determine the antimicrobial susceptibility of Neisseria gonorrhoeae from Shanghai and to type the quinolone resistance-determining regions (QRDRs) of ciprofloxacin-resistant isolates. METHODS N. gonorrhoeae isolates (n = 159) were consecutively collected from male patients in Shanghai and examined for their antimicrobial susceptibilities to penicillin, tetracycline, ciprofloxaci...

Present study investigated the antibiotic resistance profile of bacterial strains isolated from soil, sediment and waters of Eloor-Edayar Industrial belt of Kerala, South India. A total of 165 bacterial strains were isolated and tested for their sensitivity to 11 common antibiotics (Ampicillin, Erythromycin, Gentamycin, Nalidixic acid, Penicillin, Vancomycin, Novobiocin, Amikacin, Kanamycin, St...

In the study, the ciprofloxacin resistance rate was 100%. High-level ciprofloxacin resistance rate was 63.55%. Sixteen different mutation patterns involved in the formation of ciprofloxacin resistance were identified. The most prevalent were patterns P7 (25.2%), P8 (15.0%), P9 (11.2%), P1 (10.3%), and P5 (10.3%). All of the 107 NG isolates analyzed for mutations in the study have demonstrated a...

Introduction: Acinetobacter baumannii is an important bacteria because of high ability to obtain antibiotic resistance genes and creation of multi-drug resistant strains (MDR). Today, the active efflux pumps has been suggested as one of the most important mechanisms of intrinsic and acquired resistance of antibiotics in bacteria. The aim of this study was Evaluation of phenotypic and genotypic ...

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Shigellosis is a major health problem in developing countries, causing 91 million episodes and 414,000 deaths in Asia annually. Because of increasing trends towards drug resistance, this study was undertaken to monitor local resistance patterns of Shigella isolates from 8 Asian countries. METHODS Ninety eight Shigella isolates collected from 8 centers in 8 Asian countri...

OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to prospectively assess the pattern of evolution of primary resistance to antibiotics in Helicobacter pylori strains isolated from Portuguese children over a 10 year period (2000-09). METHODS A total of 1115 H. pylori strains were tested for antibiotic susceptibility to clarithromycin, metronidazole, amoxicillin, ciprofloxacin and tetracycline. RESULTS H...

OBJECTIVES We investigated the contribution of gyrA and parC mutational mechanism in decreased ciprofloxacin susceptibility of Acinetobacter baumannii isolated from burn wound infections. MATERIALS AND METHODS Ciprofloxacin susceptibility of 50 A. baumannii isolates was evaluated by disk diffusion and agar dilution methods. PCR and sequencing were performed for detection of mutation in gyrA a...

We developed a real-time PCR assay to detect single nucleotide polymorphisms associated with ciprofloxacin resistance in specimens submitted for nucleic acid amplification testing (NAAT). All three single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) targets produced high sensitivity and specificity values. The presence of ≥2 SNPs was sufficient to predict ciprofloxacin resistance in an organism.

As a result of the increasing resistance of Helicobacter pylori against first-line antibiotics, other drugs, such as quinolones, will be needed for eradication therapy in the future. We developed a real-time PCR to detect mutations in the gyrA gene associated with ciprofloxacin resistance of H. pylori, thereby contributing to the selection of patients who could be treated by ciprofloxacin-based...

The aim of this study was to examine mutations in the quinolone-resistance-determining region (QRDR) of gyrA and parC genes in Pseudomonas aeruginosa isolates. A total of 100 clinical P. aeruginosa isolates were collected from different university-affiliated hospitals in Tabriz, Iran. Minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of ciprofloxacin and levofloxacin were evaluated by agar dilution assa...
