Using Excess Biomass Sludge Acclimated in Side Stream Partial Nitrification to Evaluation Partial Nitrification and Abrupt Cold Shock Effect in main stream

چکیده مقاله:
In this study biomass acclimation in a side stream partial nitrification sequencing batch reactor (SBR) was performed under optimum conditions (T 30ºC, SRT 9± 1 days and hydraulic retention time (HRT) 1.2 day). Excess sludge for solids retention time (SRT) regulation was added to another batch reactor (main stream) which performed under different conditions for partial nitrification evaluation and calculating temperature dependency factor. The results of main stream reactor showed that temperature was an important factor that affected specific ammonia oxidation rate (sAOR) after cold shock by about 98.5%. It was demonstrated that abrupt cold shock caused a significant reduction in the sAOR; up to 25, 55 and 78% for temperature reduction from 30 to 25, 20 and 15ºC, respectively. Therefore, the temperature dependency factor was calculated about 1.0965 and 1.106 based on indirect and direct comparison, respectively. NO2/ NOx ratio analysis showed that temperature, initial ammonia, MLVSS and time affected nitrite accumulation ratio by 49.7, 14.6, 3.7 and 30.7%, respectively. Results indicated that maximum NO2/ NOx ratio was about 94.9% and was reduced to 89.4% after 270 minutes.

Nitrification in the hyporheic zone of a desert stream ecosystem
Nitrification in the hyporheic zone of Sycamore Creek, a Sonoran Desert stream, was examined, focusing on the association between respiration and nitrate production. Subsurface respiration in Sycamore Creek is highest in regions of hydrologic downwelling where organic matter derived from the stream surface is transported into the hyporheic zone. Similarly, nitrification was closely related to h...

Nitrification, the chemoautotrophic process by which NH4-N is converted to NO,-N, is an integral biogeochemical transformation in stream ecosystems. Previous research has shown that experimental addition of dissolved organic C inhibits rates of nitrification, and that NH4-N addition stimulates rates of nitrification. In many streams, large amounts of C and N may be present in particulate and so...
متن کاملSource identification of nitrous oxide on autotrophic partial nitrification in a granular sludge reactor.
Emission of nitrous oxide (N2O) during biological wastewater treatment is of growing concern since N2O is a major stratospheric ozone-depleting substance and an important greenhouse gas. The emission of N2O from a lab-scale granular sequencing batch reactor (SBR) for partial nitrification (PN) treating synthetic wastewater without organic carbon was therefore determined in this study, because P...
متن کاملModel for nitrification in activated sludge process.
A model for the simulation of nitrification in activated sludge is presented and calculations are compared with experimental results from different sources. The role of protozoa and the influence of reactor type and of diurnal variations in flow and strength of the sewage are considered. Favorable conditions for nitrification are low rates of sludge wasting, high temperatures, plug-flow-type re...
متن کاملNitrification in Activated Sludge Exposed to Static Magnetic Field
The study investigated wastewater treatment in an aerobic reactor with activated sludge exposed to static magnetic field (SMF) with mean induction of 8.1 mT. The efficiency of chemical oxygen demand removal was about 90% in a control reactor and an SMF-exposed reactor. Although the nitrification efficiency was higher than 95% in both reactors, the activity of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria was high...
متن کاملEffect of Dissolved Oxygen and Chemical Oxygen Demand to Nitrogen Ratios on the Partial Nitrification/Denitrification Process in Moving bed Biofilm Reactors
Partial nitrification was reported to be technically feasible and economically favorable, especially for wastewaterwith high ammonium concentration or low C/N ratio. In this study, the effect of dissolved oxygen (DO)and influent ratio of chemical oxygen demand to nitrogen (COD/N) ratio on biological nitrogen removal fromsynthetic wastewater was investigated. Experiments were c...
