Understorey bird responses to the edge-interior gradient in an isolated tropical rainforest of Malaysia

چکیده مقاله:
Forest fragmentation results in a loss of forest interior and an increase in edge habitat. We studied how understorey bird community composition and habitat variables changed along an edge-to-interior gradient in a 1248-ha lowland rainforest patch in peninsular Malaysia. Birds and environmental variables such as vegetation structure and litter depth were detected within a 25-m radius of each of 93 sampling points distributed throughout the forest. Species composition differed along the edge-interior gradient at the guild and species level, although only a few species were entirely confined to either edge or interior habitat. Based on bird-habitat associations along the edge-interior gradient, two groups were distinguished. Abundance of the edge-specialist group, mainly foliage-gleaning insectivores and insectivore/frugivores, was positively correlated with ground cover, light intensity, shrub cover, temperature, and percent of shrub cover between 0.5 and 2 m height. Some of these edge-preferring species also occurred in the matrix surrounding the patch and were extremely abundant, which may create problems for forest species. In contrast, the interior-specialist group, mainly terrestrial insectivores, avoided the forest edge and was positively associated with humidity, canopy cover, number of dead trees, percentage of litter cover, and depth of the litter layer. From a conservation perspective, forest remnants in the lowlands of Peninsular Malaysia that have a deep leaf litter layer, a dense canopy cover, high number of dead trees, and high relative humidity are able to support regionally significant understorey bird species that are sensitive to edge effects. As such these forests have important conservation value.

although host species generally face increased risk of brood parasitism in fragmented temperate landscapes and forest edge, little information exists to assess such risks in tropical birds. we studied how cuculidae species populations, host species population, and micro-environmental variables changed along an edge-to-interior gradient in peninsular malaysia. bird observations and environmental...
متن کاملCicadas impact bird communication in a noisy tropical rainforest
Many animals communicate through acoustic signaling, and "acoustic space" may be viewed as a limited resource that organisms compete for. If acoustic signals overlap, the information in them is masked, so there should be selection toward strategies that reduce signal overlap. The extent to which animals are able to partition acoustic space in acoustically diverse habitats such as tropical fores...
متن کاملHuman Impacts Flatten Rainforest-Savanna Gradient and Reduce Adaptive Diversity in a Rainforest Bird
Ecological gradients have long been recognized as important regions for diversification and speciation. However, little attention has been paid to the evolutionary consequences or conservation implications of human activities that fundamentally change the environmental features of such gradients. Here we show that recent deforestation in West Africa has homogenized the rainforest-savanna gradie...

15 صفحه اولWild Pigs (Sus scrofa) Mediate Large-Scale Edge Effects in a Lowland Tropical Rainforest in Peninsular Malaysia
Edge-effects greatly extend the area of tropical forests degraded through human activities. At Pasoh, Peninsular Malaysia, it has been suggested that soil disturbance by highly abundant wild pigs (Sus scrofa), which feed in adjacent Oil Palm plantations, may have mediated the invasion of Clidemia hirta (Melastomataceae) into the diverse tropical lowland rain forest. To investigate this hypothes...
