در ایالات متحده حدود ۱۵ میلیون نفر آلوده به میکروب سل می باشند و هر سال ۳۰ هزار مورد جدید گزارش می شود. انتظار می رود تا سال ۲۰۰۰ این رقم به ۵۰۰۰۰ نفر در سال برسد. تست مانتو نسبت به تست چند سوزنی که قبلاً بسیار متداول بود، بمراتب دقیق تر است و بهمین دلیل به عنوان یک روش انتخابی برای غربالگری سل شناخته شده است. امروزه این تست اولین اقدام برای اثبات عفونت کلینیکی بوده و در صورتی که بطور دقیق انجام شود، می تواند به درمان بموقع و قطع سیر بیماری منجر شود.
