The relationship of work-family conflict and spillover with psychological and physical well-being among female nurses

The conflict and spillover between work and family are the threatening factors for nurses’ wellbeing. The purpose of this study was to determine the relation between work-family conflict and spillover with psychological and somatic well being in nurses. This descriptive study was co-relational, and statistical population was the nurses of two public hospitals. Among them 256 nurses were selected using accessible sampling method. Work-family conflict questionnaire (Netemeyer, Boles & McMurrian), work-family spillover questionnaire (Small & Riley), psychological well being questionnaire (Golparvar) and somatic well being questionnaire (Golparvar) were used for data collection. Data were analyzed using multiple regression analysis by means of SPSS version 18. According to the results, work-family conflict and spillover had negative correlation with psychological and somatic well being. Among work-family conflict components, work-family conflict could explain 13.2 and 9.5 percent of the variance of psychological and somatic well being respectively. Also among work-family spillover components, homework spillover could explain 18.4 percent of the variance of psychological well being and marriage/ companionship spillover could explain 13.3 percent of the variance of somatic well being. The results of current research showed that work-family conflict and spillover could expose the nurses’ psychological and somatic well being with problems. In this regard, it is necessary for nurses to achieve suitable training to manage work-family conflict and spillover
