Reading in People with Down syndrome: “visual route” or “phonological route”?
نویسنده
چکیده مقاله:
Abstract Background and Purpose: Many people with Down syndrome learn to read to some degree, but how they learn to read has been debated by researchers. Some researchers have argued that given the phonological deficits of people with Down syndrome and their stronger visual-spatial abilities, they rely on the “visual route” to learn to read, while others have shown that the “phonological route” is also involved in learning to read. The purpose of this article is to investigate and compare the role of “visual route” and “phonological route” in learning and teaching reading to people with Down syndrome. Materials and Methods: The present study is a review, 50 pioneering and new related articles were reviewed from Springer, Wiley, Elsevier, Taylor and Francis, SAGE Publications and Emerald databases. Results: The results of this review showed that many people with Down syndrome can learn to read at least word. However, there are many variations in this area. Also, people with Down syndrome have difficulty using the “phonological route” to read, and they rely more on the “visual route” to read. However, both routes play a role in learning to read, although the role of the “visual route” is more prominent. Conclusion: to teach reading to people with Down Syndrome, you can use both the whole word teaching method, which is based on the “visual route” and the phonetic method, which is based on the “phonological route”, but the combination of these two methods is more efficient; Because relying on the “visual route”, the child will only be able to read the taught words, but to read new words, he also needs letter-sound knowledge.

متن کاملReading skills and phonological awareness acquisition in Down syndrome.
BACKGROUND Although reading abilities play a fundamental role in the acquisition of personal autonomy, up until now studies investigating these abilities in Down syndrome (DS) are aimed at defining educational or rehabilitation acquisition. However, studies describing the relationship between reading and phonological awareness in individuals with DS by comparing them to typically developing chi...
متن کاملGerman inflection: single route or dual route?
The German plural system has recently become a focal point for conflicting theories of language, both linguistic and cognitive. Marcus et al. (1995) highlight the German plural as support for the dual-route account of inflectional morphology first proposed by Pinker and colleagues (Pinker & Prince, 1988). On the dual-route account, inflectional morphology is universally subserved by a symbolic ...
متن کاملPhonological awareness in children with Down syndrome.
Research in the area of phonological awareness has mainly focused on the nature of the relationship between reading ability and awareness of phonemes. However, a recent study of phonological awareness in children with Down syndrome questioned the existence of any necessary relationship (Cossu, Rossini & Marshall, 1993). This paper describes a study of phonological awareness in children with Dow...
متن کاملA third route for reading? Implications from a case of phonological dyslexia.
Models of reading in the neuropsychological literature sometimes only include two routes from print to sound, a lexical semantic route and a sublexical phonological route. Other researchers hypothesize an additional route that involves a direct connection between lexical orthographic representations and lexical phonological representations. This so-called 'third route' has been invoked to accou...
متن کاملEarly phonological awareness and reading skills in children with Down syndrome.
Increasingly, children with Down syndrome receive literacy instruction with the expectation of acquiring functional reading skills. Unfortunately, little is known about the processes underlying literacy skills in this special population. Phonological awareness contributes to literacy development in typically developing children, however, there is inconclusive evidence about these skills in youn...
