RAPID EYE MOVEMENT SLEEP DEPRIVATION INDUCES ACETYLCHOLINESTERASE A CTIVITY IN THE PREOPTIC AREA OF THE RAT BRAIN

چکیده مقاله:
Acetylcholinesterase (AchE) is a large glycoprotein that, aside from its known cholinolytic activity, co-exists with other transmitter systems and possesses other functions. In the present study, the effects of short-term rapid-eye-movement sleep deprivation (REM-SD) on AchE activity in the anterior hypothalamic area have been investigated. Using the flower-pot method, adult male albino rats were deprived of REM sleep for a period of72, 96, and 120 h and perfused brains were then sectioned with a vibratome and stained histochemically for AchE. In comparison to control animals, marked positive AchE activity was observed in neurons located in the preoptic area in the 120SD group only. Results of this study have shown that AchE could be involved in some unknown functions related to REM sleep physiology

Some upper brainstem cholinergic neurons (pedunculopontine and laterodorsal tegmental nuclei) are involved in the generation of rapid eye movement (REM) sleep and project rostrally to the thalamus and caudally to the medulla oblongata. A previous report showed that 96 h of REM sleep deprivation in rats induced an increase in the activity of brainstem acetylcholinesterase (Achase), the enzyme wh...

Rapid eye movement (REM) sleep deprivation induces several behavioral changes. Among these, a decrease in yawning behavior produced by low doses of cholinergic agonists is observed which indicates a change in brain cholinergic neurotransmission after REM sleep deprivation. Acetylcholinesterase (Achase) controls acetylcholine (Ach) availability in the synaptic cleft. Therefore, altered Achase ac...
متن کاملPreoptic area neurons and the homeostatic regulation of rapid eye movement sleep.
The median preoptic nucleus (MnPN) and the ventral lateral preoptic area (vlPOA) of the hypothalamus express sleep-related Fos immunoreactivity, and a subset of Fos-immunoreactive neurons (IRNs) in these nuclei contain glutamic acid decarboxylase (GAD), a marker of GABAergic cells. We recently showed that the numbers of Fos-positive (Fos+) and Fos+ GAD-IRNs in both the MnPN and the vlPOA are po...

We studied the importance of genetic predisposition in the development of stress-induced hypertension in the spontaneously hypertensive rat (SHR), Wistar-Kyoto (WKY) rat, and borderline hypertensive rat (BHR; first-generation offspring of SHR and WKY). Rats were submitted to seven 72-hour sessions of rapid eye movement sleep deprivation (REM-sd) every other week during 13 weeks. Tail arterial p...
متن کاملRapid Eye Movement Sleep
• Rapid eye movement (REM) sleep was first identified by its most obvious feature: rapid eye movements occurring during sleep. In most adult mammals the electroencephalogram (EEG) of the neocortex is low in voltage during REM sleep. The hippocampus exhibits regular high-voltage theta waves throughout REM sleep. • The key brain structure for generating REM sleep is the brainstem, particularly th...
