Onm-7: Effect of Electromagnetic and Radiofrequency Fields on Male Infertility

Background: Effect of electromagnetic and radiofrequency fields on human health is not well understood, a concern is its effect on male infertility. With the increased use of modern technology, issue of protection against this fields has great importance. infertility is the problem to follow psychological - social consequences. The most common cause of infertility are: male factor, female factor, Simultaneous existence of two factors, and unknown causes. this study investigates the effect of electromagnetic and radiofrequency fields on Genital disorders and infertility in males. Materials and Methods: This article is an overview and has been done according to valid Iranian and foreign articles of the years 2005-2011 with Searching the sites, Websites and Electronic Journals. Results: Studies show that exposure electromagnetic and radiofrequency fields can be lead to increased likelihood of spermatogenesis disorder and male infertility. For example, a study was performed by Valborg Baste et al among Norwegian military men in 2008, showed that in all age groups there were significant linear trends with higher prevalence of involuntary childlessness with higher self-reported exposure to radiofrequency fields. Also, in the same year, another study was performed by Ole J. Mollerlokken et al among Norwegian military men, showed similar evidence. Intervention studies on mice,also, in Iran and other countries Shows damage to the Testis and prostate tissue and reduced sperm mobility and frequency. But in a study was performed by Prem Gathram et al in 2009, a significant relationship was found. Conclusion: Suggest of exposure equipment such as vacuum cleaners, Mobile, TV, electric shaver, microwaves, aerials, radar, etc should be avoided for a long time. Should as much as possible, protective equipment be used in the workplace against this fields.
