Near-fault seismic damage patterns and failure scenarios prediction of concrete gravity dams using nonlinear incremental dynamic analysis

چکیده مقاله:
Performance based earthquake engineering approach has been under evolution for seismic safety assessment of structures. Qualitative and quantitative definition of seismic performance levels is major challenge of concrete gravity dams. The main purpose of this article is damage patterns and failure scenarios prediction of structure while they prepare a suitable basement to determine dam seismic limit-states. Therefore nonlinear incremental dynamic analysis has been applied to dam-reservoir-rigid foundation system of Pine Flat gravity dam as a case study under the pulselike near-fault records. Then the critical zones of dam body have been recognized using a new way and a series of potential crack paths has been found. The mentioned above paths have been validated through comparing with authoritative published reports. We observed that the structure is damaged in certain patterns under near-fault records. Also formation of full crack in dam body is possible only in four paths before the possibility of total collapse. Hence three failure scenarios of concrete gravity dam have been defined in this research, in addition to damage patterns prediction. The results show that the safety level of concrete dam is increased substantially when the crest displacement response or drift ratio is limited to the conservative value.

Investigation of seismic damage index due to water level changes in reservoir through nonlinear dynamic analysis under Far-Fault and Near-Fault ground motions
In this study, reservoir water level effects on nonlinear dynamic response of concrete gravity dams are investigated. For this purpose, the nonlinear behavior of the dam concrete is captured using the concrete damage plasticity (CDP) on the non associated flow rule assumption. Water in the reservoir is represented by the Lagrangian (displacement-based) fluid finite elements. The program ABAQUS ...

Multi-layer neural networks have been used in this paper for modeling nonlinear behaviour of concrete gravity dams under earthquake excitation. Koyna dam which has been studied extensively by other authors in the past has been studied as test example in this paper too, where the nonlinear response of its crest has been modelled by the proposed algorithm. The main steps of the algorithm are as f...
متن کاملSeismic Design of Steel Structures Based on Ductility and Incremental Nonlinear Dynamic Analysis
In this paper a simple tool for seismic design of steel structures for a selected ductility level is presented. For this purpose, a consistent set of earthquakes is selected and sorted based on the maximum acceleration of ground surface. The selected records are applied as the base motion to a single-degree-of-freedom system with strain hardening and the maximum response acceleration is determi...

–This paper presents the main features and organization of STAADPRO, a computer program that has been developed for the static and seismic stability evaluations of concrete gravity dams. STAADPRO is based on the gravity method using rigid body equilibrium and beam theory to perform stress analyses, compute crack lengths, and safety factors. Seismic analyses could be done using either the pseudo...

متن کاملSimulating nonlinear behavior of CMD material in seismic analysis of concrete gravity dam
In recent years, a new type of dams namely CMD, has attracted so much attention. Different amounts of cement cause a type of behavior that be somewhere between those of embankment dams and conventional concrete dams. This behavior is not perfectly clarified and its analysis, especially under dynamical loading and in nonlinear region of the material, remains unclear. In this paper, Tobetsu dam h...
