Modulatory Effects of Memantine on Neuronal Response Properties in Rat Barrel Cortex
نویسندگان
چکیده مقاله:
Introduction: Memantine as N-Methyl-D-aspartic acid (NMDA) receptor antagonist is used in some neurological disorders. It has been reported that memantine has modulatory effects on the somatosensory information processing in healthy subjects. This study investigated the effect of memantine on electrophysiological properties of barrel cortex neurons in male rats. Methods: Single unit recording was used to evaluate the electrophysiological properties of barrel cortex neurons. The neural responses to the principal whisker (PW), adjacent whisker (AW) and combined displacement of two whiskers [20 ms inter-stimulus intervals (ISIs)] were recorded before and 2 hours after memantine gavage (10 mg/kg). A condition test ratio (CTR) was calculated for assessing inhibitory interactions. Results: Two hours after memantine gavage, neuronal ON and OFF responses to PW deflection were decreased. Also, CTR for both ON and OFF responses was decreased following memantine administration. Conclusions: The current study demonstrated that memantine modified neural response properties in the rat barrel cortex.

Effects of Dimethyl Sulfoxide on Neuronal Response Characteristics in Deep Layers of Rat Barrel Cortex
Introduction: Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) is a chemical often used as a solvent for waterinsoluble drugs. In this study, we evaluated the effect of intracerebroventricular (ICV) administration of DMSO on neural response characteristics (in 1200–1500 μm depth) of the rat barrel cortex. Methods: DMSO solution was prepared in 10% v/v concentration and injected into the later...

متن کاملNeuronal Activity in Rat Barrel Cortex Underlying Texture Discrimination
Rats and mice palpate objects with their whiskers to generate tactile sensations. This form of active sensing endows the animals with the capacity for fast and accurate texture discrimination. The present work is aimed at understanding the nature of the underlying cortical signals. We recorded neuronal activity from barrel cortex while rats used their whiskers to discriminate between rough and ...
متن کاملThe excitatory neuronal network of rat layer 4 barrel cortex.
Sensory whiskers are mapped to rodent layer 4 somatosensory cortex as discrete units termed barrels, which can be visualized at high resolution in living brain slices. Both anatomical and physiological properties of the layer 4 neuronal network can thus be investigated in the context of the functional boundaries of this sensory map. Large-scale confinement of neuronal arbors to single barrels w...
متن کاملEffects of resveratrol on intrinsic neuronal properties of CA1 pyramidal neurons in rat hippocampal slices
Introduction: Resveratrol (3,5,4-trihydroxystilbene) a non-flavonoid polyphenol found in some plants like grapes, peanuts and pomegranates, possesses a wide range of biological effects. Evidence indicates that resveratrol has beneficial effects on nervous system to induce neuroprotection. However, the cellular mechanisms of the effects are not fully determined. In the present study, the cellula...
متن کاملEffect of Norepinephrine depletion on induction of experience dependent plasticity in male rat barrel cortex
Introduction: Barrel cortex of rats is a part of somatosensory cortex, which receives information from facial whiskers. Vibrisectomy by sensory deprivation leads to some changes in the barrel cortex, which have been known as experience dependent plasticity. On the other hand, Norepinephrine (NE) and locus coeruleus, which is the main source of NE, influenced response properties of cortical bar...
