Luminous Phenomena of Earthquakes: Observations and Theories
نویسندگان
چکیده مقاله:
Over the past few years, different theories (piezoelectric, positive holes, friction-vaporization, exo-electron emission, tribo- or fracture electrification) have been presented for the interpretation of earthquake lights. Although these theories can interpret earthquake luminous, each suffer from particular problems. There are also ambiguities and questions about the location of the light, the number of light created in an earthquake, the relationship between light and lithology and the different light spectrum. In addition, the proposed theories could not interpret all the observed light (co-seismic and pre-seismic luminous), and it seems that more than one theory is needed to justify the lights. The relationship of the EQLs to active tectonic boundaries suggests all the earthquakes in which light has been seen are located on the active tectonic boundaries and the stress for producing lights should be at its maximum. This study shows that a new theory is needed. A theory that can, above all, explain the relation of light (spectrum and intensity) to lithology, the amount of stress, and active tectonic areas.

Intraplate Triggered Earthquakes: Observations and Interpretation
We present evidence that at least two of the three 1811–1812 New Madrid, central United States, mainshocks and the 1886 Charleston, South Carolina, earthquake triggered earthquakes at regional distances. In addition to previously published evidence for triggered earthquakes in the northern Kentucky/southern Ohio region in 1812, we present evidence suggesting that triggered events might have occ...
متن کاملChandra Observations of the Luminous IR Galaxy
We present a detailed analysis of high-resolution Chandra observations of the merger system NGC3256, the most IR luminous galaxy in the nearby universe. The X-ray data show that several discrete sources embedded in complex diffuse emission contribute >∼ 20% of the total emission (L tot x ∼ 8 × 10 41 ergs s in the 0.5-10 keV energy range). The compact sources are hard and extremely bright and th...
متن کاملChandra Observations of 12 Luminous Red Quasars
We present results of a study of 12 dust-reddened quasars with 0.4 < z < 2.65 and reddenings in the range 0.15 < E(B − V ) < 1.7. We obtained ACIS-S X-ray spectra of these quasars, estimated the column densities towards them, and hence obtained the gas:dust ratios in the material obscuring the quasar. We detect all but one of the red quasars in the X-rays. Even though there is no obvious correl...
متن کامل- mm Observations of Luminous Infrared Galaxies
Measurements at a wavelength of 1.25 mm have been obtained for 17 IRAS galaxies selected on the basis of high far-infrared luminosity. These measurements are used to estimate the lower and upper limits to the mass of cold dust in infrared galaxies. As a lower limit on dust mass, all of the galaxies can be successfully modeled without invoking any dust colder than the dust responsible for the 60...
متن کاملNicmos Observations of Luminous & Ultraluminous Infrared Galaxies
HST NICMOS observations of a sample of 24 luminous (LIGs: LIR[8− 1000μm] = 10L⊙) and ultraluminous (ULIGs: LIR ∼10 L⊙) infrared galaxies are presented. The observations provide, for the first time, high resolution HST imaging of the imbedded 1.1 2.2 μm nuclear regions of these mergers. All but one of the ULIGs are observed to have at least one compact (50-200 pc) nucleus, and more than half con...
