Is “Basal-like” Carcinoma of the Breast a Distinct Clinicopathologic Entity? A Critical Review with Cautionary Notes
نویسنده
چکیده مقاله:
This review deals with studies that have used cDNA microarrays and immunohistochemistry to identify a subtype of breast carcinoma recently known as “basal-like” carcinoma. The key breast carcinoma studies are critically discussed to highlight methodological problems in cohort selection, definitions, interpretation of results, and statistical analysis. It concludes that “basal-like” carcinomas do not reflect a single, biologically uniform group of breast cancers and show significant variations in their phenotypes, grades, immunoprofiles, and clinical behavior, just as a wide range of subtypes and behaviors is observed among epithelial/luminal-derived breast carcinomas. Welldesigned studies with comparison of low grade non-basal versus low grade basal and high grade non-basal versus high grade basal carcinomas are necessary before one can be convinced that this subtype represents a distinct clinicopathologic entity.

متن کاملBasal-like breast carcinoma: a phenotypically distinct entity.
Gene microarray profiling of human breast carcinomas has recently categorized invasive breast carcinomas into 5 distinct subtypes; luminal A, luminal B, normal breastlike, human epithelial growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) overexpressing, and basal-like. Basal-like breast carcinomas are characterized by high expression of basal cytokeratins; low or absent expression of estrogen receptor, progeste...

Recent gene expression profiling of breast cancer has identified specific subtypes with clinical, biologic, and therapeutic implications. The basal-like group of tumors is characterized by an expression signature similar to that of the basal/myoepithelial cells of the breast and is reported to have transcriptomic characteristics similar to those of tumors arising in BRCA1 germline mutation carr...
متن کاملFBP1 expression is associated with basal-like breast carcinoma
The present study aimed to investigate the value of liver fructose 1,6-bisphophatase (FBP1) and hypoxia-inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α) in the molecular subtyping of breast carcinoma. Tissue obtained from 60 surgical specimens from patients with breast carcinoma underwent immunohistochemical staining for cytokeratin 5/6, HIF-1α and FBP1. The variation in the expression levels of these markers and ...
