Intelligent blood glucose control in diabetic patients: design and simulation of an artificial pancreas
نویسندگان
چکیده مقاله:
Background: Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a common chronic disease with diverse complications. About 10% of the earth's population suffer from this disease. For smart control of the blood glucose in DM patients, an artificial pancreas was designed and simulated by a predictive sliding mode controller considering the time delay of insulin effect. Method: In this method, one of the time-delay glucose-insulin models was first selected. Then, using the model predictive sliding mode control, the stability of the glucose and insulin concentration of the blood was considered as the target. The performance and efficiency of the design were then verified by simulating the parameters of the proposed model in MATLAB software. Results: Using the proposed method, despite considering a 25-minute time delay from insulin injection to its effect, the glucose and insulin concentrations reached stability in 60 and 50 min, respectively. Conclusions: The results of this study indicate that the combined controller of the predictive sliding mode model control is able to control blood glucose more effectively than previous controllers and therefore can help reduce disease complications, improve patients' quality of life, and reduce costs and individual and health systems.

In this paper, chaotic dynamic and nonlinear control in a glucose-insulin system in types I diabetic patients and a healthy person have been investigated. Chaotic analysis methods of the blood glucose system include Lyapunov exponent and power spectral density based on the time series derived from the clinical data. Wolf's algorithm is used to calculate the Lyapunov exponent, which positive val...

This paper employs a new approach to regulate the blood glucose level of type I diabetic patient under an intensive insulin treatment. The closed-loop control scheme incorporates expert knowledge about treatment by using reinforcement learning theory to maintain the normoglycemic average of 80 mg/dl and the normal condition for free plasma insulin concentration in severe initial state. The insu...

Introduction: The preventive antidiabetic effects of garlic juice on blood glucose levels and pancreas tissue was evaluated in STZ-induced diabetic rats. Methods: 40 male rats were divided into five groups of 8 rats each. 1) Normal group (N), 2) Normal+Garlic group (N+G) received 1 ml garlic juice/100g BW/day for 6 weeks, 3) Diabetic group (D) injected with streptozotocin (60 mg/kg BW,i.p.), 4)...

In this paper, the blood glucose control for type 1 diabetic patients in the presence of model uncertainties and uncertain meals is considered. In order to present an efficient control approach, it is assumed that the dynamics describe the mechanism of the blood glucose regulation in type 1 diabetic patients are completely unknown. Hence, based on the universal approximation property of the rad...

Introduction: Application of electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) for the induction of generalized seizure was first introduced in 1938. It is applied for disorders as severe depression particularly for cases which do not respond to drug therapy, or during pregnancy when medication is detrimental to the fetus. The debate on the effect of ECT on blood glucose level is still contradictory. However, st...
