Insecticidal Effects of Peppermint and Black Pepper Essential Oils against Rice Weevil, Sitophilus oryzae L. and Rice Moth, Corcyra cephalonica (St.)

چکیده مقاله:
Background: The rice weevil, Sitophilus oryzae and rice moth, Corcyra cephalonica are major and cosmopolitan insect. Adults of S. oryzae (male and female) and both larvae are insatiable feeders on a great variety of grains. Objective: This study was conducted to estimate the insecticidal effect of essential oils from peppermint, Mentha piperita L. and black pepper, Piper nigrum L. against two major stored product insects. Methods: Essential oils from two species of plants were obtained by clevenger-type water distillation. The major compounds in these essential oils were identified using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and their insecticidal effect was tested against adults of the rice weevil, Sitophilus oryzae L. and the 3rd instars larvae of rice moth, Corcyra cephalonica (St.). Results: The major compounds found in peppermint were menthol, isomenthone, limonene and cineole and in black pepper were limonene, α and β pinene and caryophyllene. Highest toxicities were observed against S. oryzae populations treated with M. piperita and P. nigrum essential oils with LC50 values of 85.0 and 287.7 µL/L air after 72 hours after commencement, respectively. In the case of C. cephalonica larvae, the LC50 values were 343.9 and 530.5 µL/L air for M. piperita and P. nigrum essential oils at 72 hours after commencement, respectively. These results are attributed to the compounds present in essential oils of M. piperita and P. nigrum. Conclusion: It was resulted that M. piperita and P. nigrum oils have insecticidal effects against S. oryzae and C. cephalonica. For this reasons, the selected plant oils have potential for development of novel insecticides.

متن کاملFumigant Toxicity of Lamiaceae Plant Essential Oils and Blends of Their Constituents against Adult Rice Weevil Sitophilus oryzae.
To find a new and safe alternative to conventional insecticides, we evaluated the fumigant toxicity of eight Lamiaceae essential oils and their constituents against the adult rice weevil Sitophilus oryzae. Of the eight species tested, hyssop (Hyssopus offcinalis), majoram (Origanum majorana), and Thymus zygis essential oils showed strong fumigant toxicity against S. oryzae adults at 25 mg/L air...
متن کاملThe Complete Mitochondrial Genome of the Rice Moth, Corcyra cephalonica
The complete mitochondrial genome (mitogenome) of the rice moth, Corcyra cephalonica Stainton (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) was determined as a circular molecular of 15,273 bp in size. The mitogenome composition (37 genes) and gene order are the same as the other lepidopterans. Nucleotide composition of the C. cephalonica mitogenome is highly A+T biased (80.43%) like other insects. Twelve protein-co...
متن کاملBIOLOGICAL ACTIVITY OF ESSENTIAL OILS FROM LEAVES AND FRUITS OF PEPPER TREE (Schinus molle L.) TO CONTROL RICE WEEVIL (Sitophilus oryzae L.)
Rice weevil (Sitophilus oryzae L.) is a primary insect pest of stored grain. The development of resistance resulted in the application of synthetic insecticides. In recent years many plant essential oils have provided potential alternatives to currently used insect control agents. The Brazilian pepper tree (Schinus molle L. var. areira (L.) DC.) (Anacardiaceae) has different biological properti...
متن کاملProtein-enriched pea flour extract protects stored milled rice against the rice weevil, Sitophilus oryzae
Studies were conducted to evaluate the effect of a protein-enriched pea (Pisum sativum var. Bonneville) flour extract against the rice weevil, Sitophilus oryzae in its repellency, toxicity, effect on fecundity, stability and sensory properties. Milled rice admixed with pea flour extract at 1% concentration significantly repelled S. oryzae. Mortality of S. oryzae was found to increase and fecund...
متن کاملStudies on zinc toxicity in the larvae of the rice moth, Corcyra cephalonica St.
Zinc salts fed at relatively high concentrations in the diet have been known to produce deleterious effects. Sutton & Nelson (1938) found that 1 % of zinc as carbonate impaired the growth and general health of rats. Smith & Larson (1946) were, however, the first to study extensively this phenomenon in rats. They established that this condition manifested itself in the following two distinct and...
