Fasting and Experimental Animals, Detrimental or Positive?
نویسندگان
چکیده مقاله:
While fasting has been practiced for centuries, its beneficial effects was unknown until recently. This review tries to analyze the current literature of how fasting and intermittent fasting (IF) could affect clinical pathological parameters, learning, mood and brain plasticity. The effects of different ways of fasting on metabolism and stress were also explored. Animal experiments have elucidated fasting and IF could exert positive effects on learning, mood and brain, plus metabolic functions such lowering plasma glucose and insulin level and improvement in lipid metabolism (reduced visceral fat tissue and increased plasma adiponectin level), and an increased resistance to stress. Thus, more clinical studies are necessary to test the effectiveness of fasting and IF in preventing different diseases.

متن کاملApoptosis in atherosclerosis: beneficial or detrimental?
Several groups have demonstrated apoptotic cell death in atherosclerotic plaques. The significance of apoptosis in atherosclerosis depends on the stage of the plaque, localization and the cell types involved. Both macrophages and smooth muscle cells undergo apoptosis in atherosclerotic plaques. Apoptosis of macrophages is mainly present in regions showing signs of DNA synthesis/repair. Smooth m...

متن کاملThe rate of ethanol metabolism in fed and fasting animals.
The rate of metabolism of ethanol’ in the animal body is generally accepted as being relatively constant regardless of the amount of alcohol present. The first step in the chain of oxidations of alcohol to acetaldehyde with the simultaneous reduction of diphosphopyridine nucleotide has been found to be the ratelimiting factor (1). A variety of conditions has been found effective in greater or l...
متن کاملDetrimental effects of reward. Reality or myth?
Based on seemingly overwhelming empirical evidence of the decremental effects of reward on intrinsic task interest and creativity, the use of reward to alter human behavior has been challenged in literature reviews, textbooks, and the popular media. An analysis of a quarter century of research on intrinsic task interest and creativity revealed, however, that (a) detrimental effects of reward oc...
