Epidemiology of Inflight Medical Events
نویسندگان
چکیده مقاله:
Introduction: Since the 1950s, air travel has grown exponentially. In 2018, the number of international air passengers was estimated at 4.1 billion. Air travel exposes the passenger to a number of constraints (like physical constraints, stress) that can be correlated and lead to an inflight medical event, especially for passengers with chronic conditions or fragile health. Methods: In June 2017, a mini review of the literature was conducted in order to summarize the data on inflight medical events and their frequency, types, and consequences. Results: The most frequent inflight medical events are syncope and lipothymic discomfort, followed by digestive disorders, cardiorespiratory symptoms, neuropsychiatric disorders, and trauma. In almost two-thirds of all cases, these medical events are linked to a pre-existing pathology. There is no reliable register of inflight medical events, but their number is estimated to be between 120 to 350 each day throughout the world. Conclusion: The definition of an inflight medical event deserves to be specified, and the collection of these events needs to be standardized. This will help bring about a better understanding of the issue and maybe raise awareness among passengers with chronic diseases or fragile health and their general practitioners.

Epidemiology of Medical Events on a Commercial African National Airline Carrier Between 2009 and 2011
Introduction: An estimated 3.8 billion passengers traveled on commercial aircraft in 2016, of whom close to 1.5 billion crossed international boundaries. Modern commercial aircrafts can carry up to 800 passengers and can fly more than 18 hours. Although not very common, in-flight medical incidents can result in flight diversions that are costly and extremely inconvenient. The a...
متن کاملEpidemiology of adverse events in air medical transport.
OBJECTIVES This observational study determined frequency and describes all-cause adverse event epidemiology in a large air medical transport system. METHODS Records of a mandatory reporting system were reviewed and a data set containing all of the patient care records was searched to identify aviation- and non-aviation-related adverse events. Two reviewers independently identified adverse eve...
متن کاملEpidemiology of medical error
Newspaper and television stories of catastrophic injuries occurring at the hands of clinicians spotlight the problem of medical error but provide little insight into its nature or magnitude. Clinicians, patients, and policymakers may underestimate the magnitude of risk and the extent of harm. We review the epidemiology of medical error, concentrating primarily on the prevalence and consequences...

15 صفحه اولTemporal Classification of Medical Events
We investigate the task of assigning medical events in clinical narratives to discrete time-bins. The time-bins are defined to capture when a medical event occurs relative to the hospital admission date in each clinical narrative. We model the problem as a sequence tagging task using Conditional Random Fields. We extract a combination of lexical, section-based and temporal features from medical...
