Effect of laparoscopic sleeve gasterectomy on the quality of life in patients with morbid obesity

Background: During the recent years, much attention has been paid to sleeve gastrectomy (SG). However, it is important to know whether SG really improves the patients' quality of life (QoL). So far, no study has been conducted in Iranian society in this regard. Thus, in the current study, the effects of SG on QoL in Iranian patients with morbid obesity was investigated. Materials and methods: In the present before-after study, the patients with indication of SG who signed the informed consent were enrolled. The qualified patients included patients with a BMI ≥ 40 Kg/m2 or those with 35 kg/m2 <BMI< 40 kg/m2 and comorbidities such as type II diabetes mellitus, hypertension or cardiac diseases, etc. QoL was measured using WHO-QOL 100 questionnaire. The questionnaire was completed before the surgery and 6 and 12 months postoperatively. Results: A total of 100 patients enrolled in the study (51 females and 49 males). BMI decreased significantly from 6.5±52.5 kg/m2 preoperatively to 5.1±35.4 kg/m2 at the first postoperative day (p<0.001). The WHO-QOL 100 score increased significantly from 11.4±47.9 to 11.3±82.3 (p<0.05). Conclusion: It seems that SG is associated with significantly improved QoL after one year. However, more studies with long-term follow up are required. Keywords
