Comparing Two Methods of Teaching Ventilation Skills, Laryngoscopy and Tracheal Intubation, in Anesthesiology Students

چکیده مقاله:
Introduction: Teaching some clinical skills to students of medicine and paramedics for the first time on patients is unsafe therefore, a number of skills are primarily practiced on models. This study was conducted in order to determine the effect of practical training in clinical skills center. Methods: This quasi-experimental study was performed on 60 students entering the university in 2003-2004. The intervention group received the training on clinical skills (ventilation, laryngoscopy, and tracheal intubation) in clinical skills center before stepping into clinic, but the control group did not receive the training. The performance of the students of both groups was evaluated at the end of the term through direct observation checklist and it was compared in two groups using descriptive test, Chi², and Fisher. The mean score of the investigated skills was compared by t test. Results: The difference of the accuracy rate of the skills of ventilation, laryngoscopy, and tracheal intubation in two groups of intervention and control was significant using Fisher test. In addition comparing the skill of chipset intubation and fixing it in trachea and the manner of fixation and making sure about its placement in two groups revealed a significant difference. Conclusion: Training and practical performance of critical skills on models before performing it on patient may reduce detriments due to lack of proficiency by improving students' abilities.

Complications of rigid laryngoscopy and tracheal intubation.
To the Editor: We read with great interest the article of Lee JJ et al. that describes two complications of tracheal intubation in a neonate. We believe, however, that these two complications could have been avoided if the following precautions and techniques were used. (1) Tracheal intubation was achieved after three esophageal intubations. It was not mentioned if the esophageal intubation was...
متن کامل[Difficult laryngoscopy and tracheal intubation: observational study].
INTRODUCTION Since anesthesia complications associated with unexpected difficult airway are potentially catastrophic, they should be avoided. The modified Mallampati test and jaw-thrust maneuver enable the identification of difficult airway. The aim of this study was to associate the modified Mallampati test and the jaw-thrust maneuver with laryngoscopy (Cormack-Lehane) in an attempt to identif...

Introduction: Considering the importance of learning dietary exchange list in academic nutrition education, teaching it gains significance, too. Thus, this study is going to compare two different teaching methods regarding dietary exchange list to students of nutritional science. Methods: This quasi-experimental study was conducted on 49 students of nutritional science in two semesters ...
متن کاملExpected difficult tracheal intubation: a prospective comparison of direct laryngoscopy and video laryngoscopy in 200 patients.
BACKGROUND The Berci-Kaplan video laryngoscope was developed to improve the visualization of the glottis and ease tracheal intubation. Whether this technique is also effective in patients with an expected difficult intubation is unclear. We have prospectively evaluated the conditions and success rate of tracheal intubation in patients with a Mallampati score of III or IV. METHODS Two hundred ...
متن کاملDifficult laryngoscopy and tracheal intubation due to calcified stylohyoid ligaments.
Two cases of difficult laryngoscopy and tracheal intubation caused by calcified stylohyoid ligaments are presented. Neither patient exhibited a skin crease over the hyoid bone. It is suggested that inability to lift up the epiglottis from the posterior pharyngeal wall be taken as a more useful sign of this condition than the presence of the skin crease.
متن کاملVideo and optic laryngoscopy assisted tracheal intubation--the new era.
With advances in technology, videoscopy and optic intubation have been gaining popularity particularly in patients with difficult airways or as rescue devices in failed intubation attempts. Their routine use is, however an uncommon occurrence. This review paper will summarise some of those newly developed devices currently available to assist tracheal intubation, their advantages, disadvantages...
